Russian invasion of Ukraine

Does anyone really know what Putin is trying to achieve? His stated motivation was to stop the Ukraine joining NATO. I can understand Russia not wanting NATO on their doorstep but how does moving your doorstep next door to existing NATO member countries satisfy that target?
the eu is his target, brexit one of his weapons, paid for and got..

You lied when you said that you weren't Arron Banks didn't you?

@Prestwich_Blue has already given an eloquent response to you. Go read up on MMT. No one said it was unlimited.

Unfortunately there are a few people on this website who prefer to construct strawmen rather than engage in good faith.

There are some who do this unconsciously.

And I'm sure you are aware that government putting up taxes takes money out of the economy and slows down growth.

It’s not genius to close your mind off to new knowledge.
Lefties going to left.

Poland and Czech Repuvlic have closed their airspace to Russian planes.

Not sure if they could do this but if they can surely its time for Apple to disable its phones in Russia.
Not a great idea. It would cut off a means of communication between people who oppose the Putin regime whilst it would have no effect on the regime itself.

That does not make any sense. You make 1 friend any alienate 100.
It requires Russia's vote since its a permanent member. Concurring votes of the five permanent members is mandatory to pass that resolution which is considered important to the UAE.

Modern Monetary Theory says that you can actually. If your currency is a sovereign one, like the dollar or sterling, there's no problem printing money while debt is cheap. It's when you get inflation, as we have now, interest rates go up significantly and the cost of debt servicing balloons that printing money becomes problematic.

I know those who worship Thatcher & Friedman love her housewife analogy regarding spending but even then it was a fallacy.

So not indefinitely then ;-)

I do get this stuff - actually I studied macro economics as part of my degree. And I am fully supportive of borrowing to stimulate growth when interest rates are low. I just don't like the typical lefty attitude that the state can spend what it likes whenever it likes without economic consequence.

I can actually as I have what you might describe as something of a passing academic interest in this specific area. Rather than me link or post acres of peer reviewed and published articles that back this up, I suggest you get your hello kitty phone out and Google 'Stephen Walt Russia Ukraine'. This will provide exactly what you ask, as well as some equally reasoned opposing arguments which I think you might enjoy more. You are most welcome.

What specific area and what academic interest, if u don't mind me asking. Feel free to take it to PMs if it isnt for this thread.

Given the source, take it for what it's worth at the moment.

Russia about to be hit hard economically, the Russian people are going to be a lot worse off, all because of their deranged government.

Who knows - my own view is democracy is his target, specifically democracy in Ukraine because of its close links to many Russians he can’t afford Russians thinking there is a better political system than his.
