Russian invasion of Ukraine

To be fair, I'm not an authority on this kind of thing but just some bloke sitting in a flat hundreds of miles from the main events. I can quite easily be wrong.

Also, I do think that the Russians probably have sufficient forces and firepower to prevail in the relatively short term, albeit probably after a much longer, harder fight and with far greater casualties than the political/military elite expected. However, that doesn't mean they eventually win, just that they'll occupy most of Ukraine at some point and install some kind of puppet government in Kyiv.

How they expect a pro-Russian government to retain power there in the longer term (apart, possibly, for some small territories in the east) is currently not remotely clear to me. Surely they can't keep huge numbers of troops stationed there indefinitely to fight an insurgency, and the willingness of the Ukrainians to keep fighting is plain for all to see.

Of course on stuff like this, I defer to people with a much greater knowledge of these types of military issues than I do. Mine is very much an amateur, layman's view.
Sure, but I'd much rather read what you have to say than all the arguing in this thread, to me your perspective/opinion is worth more than many of the posts from the so called experts who, like me, have no idea what they're talking about.

Please keep posting as and when convenient.

One thing that can't be questioned is the bravery of the Ukranian people, led by someone who knows what to say, what to do, how to behave in such troubled times.

Theres been consistent calls for days now to send Nato troops and machinery in.
There have been the odd few mentions of it, which then seem to get quietened down by reasoned arguements why that's not a good idea.

There have also been the odd mentions of 'supporting' Putin, which seem to continue.

The vast majority have been about the horror of war, the fear of nuclear, the reslience of Ukrainians, the ongoing combat, the perhaps surprising lack of complete success by Russians, plane tracks of NATO, jokes to lighten the mood, UN, China, UAE, sports response, financial implications, oligarchs wealth in UK, russian tourist behaviour, usual hypocritical UK sports media...

Missing the point entirely. Nice spin.

The resolution was an opportunity to show a united front and condemn this disgusting aggression, whether you were 100% behind it or not. Not to vote with the resolution is sending a very poor message and disrespectful to your supposed partners. I mean, Putins actions are so reprehensible - why would anyone think abstaining is even showing neutrality - no matter what weasel words they preface it with?

Agree an Abstain also doesn’t mean backing of Russia.

That is how radicalisation works when you polarise and exclude views. No one is as far as I can see supporting Russia, but you should feel secure enough in your own views that you can just shrug and walk past the ones you don't like. Obviously if someone is proposing something extreme it needs challenged, but unless I've missed some posts I've not seen any of that.
Do you think society’s views on Hitler are too polarised? Should the holocaust have more ‘middle ground’ views?
