We need to forget about frankie de jong because at £70 million it ain’t happening especially with haaland coming in . This guy at the prices quoted is an absolute steal.
FDJ would play week in week out at UTD he aint coming to City imo

Loved Phillips last year and thought he was instrumental in Leeds' top 10 finish. Statistically one of the best DMs in the league too and not sure how that can be argued against.

Obviously this year he hasn't been able to push on due to injuries and other issues (and Leeds' possible relegation is intrinsically connected to Phillips' lack of game time, IMO) but surprised to see such a lot of negativity around a promising, reasonably young, and perhaps most importantly home-grown DM who would be available for a pretty cheap fee and could be a very able deputy to Rodri who obviously has the position locked down but could use a bit of relief from time to time.

For me it's a very attractive idea. Don't know if it'll happen but, having watched that Leeds Amazon documentary, I got the impression that Phillips was definitely one of the sharper tools in the Leeds box and had a lot of passion and willingness to learn, so I wouldn't at all be unhappy to see him come in.
Like I've said before & backed up by my best mate who follows Leeds home & away

Phillips when fit is shit hot at breaking up play & not frightened to put a good hard tackle in

His weakness is once he's won it there's no plan B or C he stands & admires

In this City team its about the next 4-5-6 passes where he runs & receives or box to box thats where Kalvin Phillips isn't good enough imo & there's

Can he learn this from Pep?

Maybe but Rice is 100 x better & all round CM player

I would re sign Douglas Luiz he is better or just as good as Phillips again imo

Douglas Luiz is not better than Phillips, haha!

At first I was skeptical of this deal but ultimately I trust Pep’s judgment, especially on defensive midfielders. We shouldn’t forget that Pep was one of the best DMs of all time. For £25 million, I’d take Phillips.
People seem to be under the impression his skill set starts and ends with being a destroyer,it doesn't.The lad is very able in the deep lying playmaker role,he has good vision and can definitely pick a pass.

If he arrives here,he'll surprise a few.

Add that to him being use to a Bielsa system with high intensity... If City can get him into something that he showed during the Euros, it's such a good player to have.

Aye, have mentioned this in previous threads too. The issue is West Ham have had a cracking season & Leeds havn't so naturally Rice is touted about & quite rightly too. As much as I like Rice, he will cost north of £100m with a huge wage packet. Furthermore, at times it does look like he's running through treacle & always looks to be exhausted with his long runs venturing forward. However, his positional awareness is top notch & reads the defensive side of things extremely well which should actually be expected since his natural position was in defence before moving into the CDM role.

If I remember correctly, it wasn't long ago in the summer of the Euros where Phillips was getting the plaudits for his performances in an England shirt, even more so than Rice since for some reason Southgate went ultra conservative in the tournament & played both CDMs together. He impressed me in the tournament more than Rice with his quick & tenacious performances. Rice seems to have a better an eye for a pass but it was actually Phillips who managed to help break the deadlock for England in the opening game against Croatia by finding a pass to Sterling who scored the winner in this particular game. Of course would love Frenkie De Jong to join us in midfield this summer but this isn't fantasy football & Phillips would be a shrewd signing if indeed we are balls deep in for Bellingham next summer.

Hes a good player. Excellent passer. Slow and injury prone though? Have any ITK's said anything about this transfer?

In terms of someone who's gonna rotate off Rodri: Its fairly easy to get a player of good quality for 25m rather than one for 80 mil or 120 mil
