The Conservative Party

The pact - declared or not - is the best way to defeat the Tories who are weighting the system in their favour - it would also pile pressure on fatso. So many Tories will be fearful of losing their seats ( on the gravy train ) as outside the HoC taking coke and sexually assaulting people actually has consequences and most wouldn't get a job paying what they are on now when you add in the exe's - plus their friends and families working for them will be out of work too
I agree with all of that which is why this seat would be such an interesting one were it to go to a by-election. If Labour could win it, then it would be an enormous fillip for Starmer, and It would scare the bejesus out of those Conservatives across middle England.

How hard must it be to go a week without a scandal?
Incredibly.

When a party has been in power for so long, a sense of entitlement takes hold and people behave in a way they otherwise might not. Similarly, when a party suspects that its days in power are numbered, Members may act with less restraint and take liberties that they might otherwise not. The current Government is probably a combination of both.

Back in the 1990s, the Major Government was plagued by similar scandals but those arguably became more publicised because his administration was simultaneously preaching ’Back to Basics‘, so every exposure reeked of hypocrisy. The Johnson Government has never taken such a moral tone, but I suppose we have to view its behaviour against the backdrop of lockdown and enormous public sacrifice. Even though lockdown has passed and COVID is no longer the main story, it will continue to affect how we interpret the behaviour of those in high office.

Pincher suspended and will sit as an Independent. He currently enjoys a 19,634 majority in Tamworth over Labour, so if it were to become a by-election, it would be a big test for Starmer.

I live in Tamworth and I can tell you that I feel a real change going on here.

People are NOT happy with Pincher (and not just for this latest indiscretion).

The Conservatives do not want a by-election which is why they are so keen to draw a line under it, but such incidents inevitably get the investigative journalists sniffing around, so if there are other skeletons in the cupboard, they’re likely to be exposed.

I take it ‘The Phoenix’ is an interesting waterhole. :-)

I would imagine the 'Sundays' tomorrow will run stories about such, thereby ramping up the pressure on him to resign and thus another by-election.
It's a good distraction from BJgate. Johnson will happily sacrifice him and another By election with the majority he has.

Yes to the first part but maybe no to the second.

They thought that holding the two by-elections last month would somehow draw a line under events and move on, yet here we are a few weeks later and similar problems are arising. It’s impossible for him to now shake off the image that he’s presiding over some kind of bacchanalian orgy while the rest of the country is on its uppers.

It’s also one thing to see the Liberal Democrats overturn big majorities in by-elections, but were Labour to take Tamworth, it would be an even greater concern: it would propel Starmer forward as a serious challenger. For that reason, I presume they’ll try desperately hard not to have another by-election

Would he go for a snap election?

I thought he was telling in Ferrari's interview how he tried to bat the question off and was very flustered.

The Phoenix is bloody awful :-D Not my pub of choice.

Ale fans are actually a bit spoilt in Tamworth at the moment with 6 pubs within a 5 walk that you would class as 'proper' pubs that do real guest ales :)

I thought these self proclaimed Thatcherites understood that Thatcherism was about passing on wealth to the next generation not fucking debt
