At the moment, I doubt it. I think he’d like to keep that as a threat as much for those backbenchers who are plotting against him: pipe down or I’ll call a snap election. Quite a few would likely not be returned.

Similarly, I’m not sure he could go from calling for ‘getting on with the job’ and telling the Scots ‘now us not the time for division’ to having an unnecessary General Election.

He still has a tonking majority and a right-wing Government that has a once in a lifetime chance to decouple the U.K. from the EU, which they will do as fast as possible. The economic pain for the country is only going to worsen, but in my humble he’ll stick/brass it out until January’25.

You are probably right but with a scandal every other day - little progress on Brexit ( in fact looking at the protocol they want to go back on it ) - galloping inflation - rising prices - rising tactics etc those back benchers are going to have to look at a wager - do we go through to the bitter end with him and like as not lose our marginal seats unless somethings change remarkably - or do we get rid and replace him whilst giving a new leader to refresh and re-launch the Tories with a chance of retaining more ( ie their ) seats?

Under normal circumstances that might be possible, but we all know these are anything but normal circumstances. The numbers on the right of the party are still strong enough to keep Johnson in place; they’re also ideologically driven and know that they will never, ever get this chance again. They’re only there because of him, and he’s only there because of them. Consequently, the moment they give up on him and their aim, so as to reconcile with the centre or left of the party, is the moment they give up on their dream. That cannot be allowed until they have destroyed every bridge back to the continent. The numbers on the right also believe that they have an English mandate and that is far more powerful than a few disgruntled MPs or grassed off mid-term constituencies.

The Government knows rough seas lie ahead but is banking on being through them in 2024, at which point it will be able to make tax cuts and go to the polls.

Too many Tories have invested way too much in Johnson to turn back now and the same can be said of leave voters and Brexit.

Economy in the toilet, inept government, gaffes and scandals every day, in political terms we've become unshockable. What's a few more turds piled on an already humongous mountain of shit? We've all grown accustomed to the stench.

There is no alternative to Johnson inside the Tory Party and the opposition is too weak to force the Tories hand.

And though Johnson threatens his back benchers with a snap election, there won't be one for another two and a half years, let that sink in.

Johnson and his sorry band are going to plough on regardless.

Down here in Kent, they can’t build houses quick enough , population has increased 20% in the last 6 years (Dartford), lovely woodland and greenery is being replaced by housing, traffic is gridlocked everywhere. It’s a nightmare. So not sure I advocate to keep on building

traffic may be gridlocked because of issues at the port ( Don't mention Brexit I did but I think that I got away with it ) however NIMBYS need more shout - more control - more rejecting that - suggestion ; maybe reject /vote out councillors and MP's who advocate it? Just a suggestion - but we are told we have the power of recall at the ballot box so reject your councillor/MP who advocates this and make it clear why this has been done. Being too passive is what these bastards have relied upon for too long
