Gas & Electricity

The issue with the 85k bracket isn’t that they’re going to struggle as they clearly won’t compared to a lot of people. Them cutting down significantly on spending will have a huge knock on impact to others though.

Doesn't sound like I'll be getting any help from Sunak if he gets in because me and my wife both work (not for great money). He's going down the low income households (that we always miss out on as we are usually just above the threshold) & pensioners route. That's the punishment you get for getting married, having kids and trying to better yourself.

It's ok though coz at least I'll know my sister-in-law down the road who sits on her arse all day, gets everything paid for her, drives about in her brand new car she gets coz one of her 4 kids is naughty and doesn't declare that her working partner lives with her, will be nice and warm & quids in... again....

Rant over!
any handouts have to be across the board, disabled people, sick people, retired people, working people, cold is being cold whichever cat your in

But who is going to pay for it?

The reality is the poor or those who can't work will get help which is of course needed. For everyone else though they'll get absolutely nothing because the treasury will deem they can afford it however they'll have to cut down and suffer. The rich obviously won't give a toss and will carry on as before.

This is why a recession is predicted, the countries spending power is about to fall on its arse.

This 85k story is a piss take. Don't waste your time even considering the crap . If anyone can not live on 85k they need locking up .
Or maybe they are operating as a limited company and didn’t get a single penny from the government in the pandemic and are only just getting back on their feet now.

Been doomsday prepping today just in case we get power cuts. Bought some emergency hurricane lamps and a two ring camping cooker with grill !!!! I know !! but it added up to the grand sum of £60 once those lights flicker and the interweb thingy crashes it will be money well spent !!!!!

Been speaking to a few people about this in the last week or two.

An increase in price for the food shop means cutting back on a Starbucks or a McDonald’s breakfast or whatever. Save a few quid here and there, very annoying but doable at a stretch.

The thing with energy prices going up to £400+ a month or more, is that when you take into account a mortgage or rent, nursery fees, maybe a bit of car finance, then council tax… on say £1500 a month take home, no matter which way you massage the figures, the energy bills aren’t getting paid. It simply can’t be done for many people.

I reckon this winter will be mayhem - because there’s no way they’d cut off the energy of millions, not because they won’t pay, but because they physically can’t pay?

So far any existing price increases in the weekly shop or whatever else, can largely be covered by cutting costs elsewhere.

That’s not the case for energy bills, and also for mortgages as fixed rate deals run out and people have to remortgage on deals hundreds of pounds a month more expensive than they’ve been used to.

Problem is if you bail everyone out on their energy bills power cuts are guaranteed this winter. This is because the higher prices are signalling there is a shortage of energy and we need to use less. If people are bailed out on their bills they wont use less...

Well my daughter is about to find out what it was like for us growing up. Certainly be more focus on us getting together round the table for board games, card games and pen and paper. Going to use this Winter as a time to get even closer as a family. Christmas will be scaled back and the focus put on the things that matter the most. We'll more than survive, teach ourselves a few lessons and come out the other side.

I'd rather have a hoody and beanie on playing chase the Ace than laying in wait all night praying it isn't my turn for a Russian missile through my window.

Quite like the sentiment behind this but on your last point, it doesn’t need to be an either or.

Wonder how many people will end up wired into the street leccy? Can it still be done by someone who knows what they are doing? Don’t think I’ll try it myself with my DIY skills or lack of them!

So the well off will think they can carry on spending but on what lots of restaurants will be shutting down, pubs and clubs as well, massive energy bills and no one can afford to go out, I expect in the next 8 weeks lots of places boarding up as they realise that’s it!

I'm noticing many places quieter now mate and this weekend is the last hurrah.. Holidays over nights drawing in fast and colder weather round the corner

This energy crisis will make covid look like a small drama.

This is going to destroy communities and civilisation as we know it.

Hospitality industry will be hardest hit as no one will be able to afford to go out and enjoy a few drinks with their pals. And to stick the boot in, their own overheads are sky rocketing and they can't increase the prices to rectify this as people are already turning their backs on the inflated prices after covid. It's lose lose for them.

Other small businesses will close as they are in the same situation.

The only winners will be the supermarkets again.

There will be carnage this winter. I feel sorry for local businesses that will pretty much close overnight and the government don't care. They are burying their heads in the sand. This will take years and years to repair, and I don't think Britain will be the same again.
