The British Monarchy

The Queen was head of State for effectively two generations.

I would question why you believe her position was the cause of the decline in the quality of politicians over the past thirty years, if such a decline wasn’t evident during the previous forty? Empirically, if you’re looking for the cause of a trend, the constant variables would tend to be overlooked, so again I can’t agree with your suggestion that stability is the cause of a sharp, recent and seemingly accelerating decline.

Personally, I think that having a head of State who has no political ambitions is a major positive.
I didn’t say it was the cause and nor do I believe it to be so. But I do think, on balance, it’s likely to be part of the problem for reasons I’ve outlined.

"The stability that a monarchy has provided must also have contributed to the oscillation within our political system and institutions which has undoubtedly (imo) precipitated our decline as a nation. One only has to look at the pitiful quality of politicians across the political spectrum today compared to a generation ago to appreciate how stark that decline is."

Do you not think that would also apply to the executive branch in the U.S. , with the polarization there, the quality in particular of MAGA candidates, yet they have reached this point in significantly less time (250 years) and having ditched a monarchy?
I'm certainly not a rampant royalist, nevertheless it is an interesting debate
I think the US system is even more flawed and anachronistic than ours, mate.

Agreed mate , their constitution isn't fit for purpose in the 21st century. Furthermore it is so set in stone politically that it's impossible to change it.

The 2nd Amendment just for starters is open to the most whack job of interpretations
For another thread I suppose

Agree with everything you’ve said. Including the last bit!

Check this out for an example of entitlement. Move it yourself you jumbo eared ****. Fucking appalling.

Sums them up, Magic.

More entitled and superior than a peak Baconface era rag.

Some nutcase on another thread was saying the royals have never struck them as self centred.

Sometimes I really do despair.

I think you underestimate how much work the Queen would have to have done to have the understanding of all the countries’ laws, customs and political situations when she would meet their presidents, prime ministers and ambassadors. And she was doing that sort of work into her 90s.

Every leader she met spoke very highly of her knowledge and dedication to detail. You wouldn’t get world leaders saying what they have about her this week if she was just someone who showed her face at public events to cut a ribbon (including from Putin). If she was just someone who did that, world leaders would react to her death like that Alan Aprtridge “so what” gif.

She was an important part of many countries gaining their independence during her reign. And then has been a huge figure of the Commonwealth and keeping the Commonwealth going. She got 46 countries to join the Commonwealth during her reign. What other person in history has seen an empire crumble, help in getting countries gain independence from that empire, and then work with nearly 50 independent countries and get them to voluntarily join the old leader of that empire in a multilateral union that benefits all involved in ways from lower trade prices to laws to abide by democracy and avoidance of human right abuses?

It’s daft when people say the Queen did fuck all.

I might work harder day-to-day in my life than she did, but I could live for 1,000 years and not achieve what she did through her work.

In reality what would you expect world leaders to say about her publically mate?

“She was alright”?, “Not a bad old bird”?

Of course they’re going to blow mad smoke up her ring.

Don’t despair.

To take on the burden of others stupidity, is worse than the stupidity itself. Magic 2022

How dya like them apples Socrates?

Drops Mic leaves stage and enters a classy limo and sips a Malt.

If he'd moved it himself, correspondents would have highlighted his humility and good nature. Followed by a BBC article or half hour special about The 6 Times King Charles Surprised the Royal Household (looking at the times he deigned to pull out a chair or wipe his own arse)

And it would've been swallowed up by the majority, such is the nature of this crazy country
He is day one on the job doing this shit.

I have seen other people saying the "table is too small" for fuck sake, if he pissed in their mouth they would call wine. His demeanour and temper there is pure petulance.

I previously posted that the Queen managed 70 years of rarely a misstep in public. The monarchy is fucked.

Most rich families stole their wealth at some point or other.
At least many rich families owned mills and factories, employing thousands poor people and allowing them to buy food and the necessities, even supplying basic housing.
Royalty has always done the opposite, taken taxes for just being in the Palaces etc.
