First of all Pep doesn't "instruct" who to bid for and how much.
Targets are identified and a maximum price agreed by several people "including Pep".
There is no random bidding just to raise a prices to another club.

Aluko may be right, that is what happens in lower/other leagues "as it's what she has done in the past".
There is not a cat in hell's chance that happening at an elite club. It would be absolutely amateur hour for any to club to do this "to do their mate a favour".
So she is totally wrong about City doing this.

Now of course there may be an unintended benefit to bidding then withdrawing if a bid isn't accepted.
Like what happened with Sanchez and United. Our bid was turned down. So we quietly moved on to other business.
United were apparently unaware of this, and some how got themselves in a bidding war when they were the only bidder!
The result was they massively over paid, which meant they were less threat to us for our other targets.

Anybody suggesting she was in any way right is a dumb as she is...

The one caveat to that is why bid £90m, a figure which Arse had rejected days before?

It's as if we wanted to panic Arse into massively upping their bid, & then telling all involved "It's a bit rich for our blood blud, so we're out!"

Arse fans ain't happy! Can't you tell? A few days ago the place was crawling with em, but they've disappeared up their own arses since we "ended our interest" lickety split! Lol :-)
The fact we bid a figure that had already been rejected tells me it was just a message to Arsenal that we were interested and intended to panic them into upping their bid.
It was a free hit for us.
If we were serious about buying him, surely our initial bid would have been higher than Arsenal's.

Fuck me giddy arsenal fans on sky sports news already.

Can't stop laughing. One was saying they are back.

I thought they was back last year. Looks like they've won the 'we've signed more players than you' trophy already.

Fuckin tarquins.
Good.

After all it was their "title challenge" that spurned us on to a memorable Treble.

Hope they do the same next season!

The thought of the Arse spending £170m (so far), just to tread water delights me.

If they found themselves an actual finisher, that would have me a bit more nervous.

We have spent £25M to tread water, also, but we're the ones others have to catch.

We have form for making others drive up their own offers, just for us to switch tact that keeps us ahead of the chasers.

It's like other clubs never learn.

Er.. Gvardiol...?

West Ham have played a blinder to be honest, they knew Arsenal wanted Rice and Vice Versa, player agreed personal terms and just club to agree fee, used the convenience of City being at the table to squeeze Arsenal to a fee they were happy with. If City weren't at the table then Arsenal would be 20mill better off, negatives can become positives :-)

He was never choosing City

Don't forget a similar offer from Arsenal or any Italian club likely has a different structure than an offer from City

I was surprised when i first heard we were even in for him.
I thought it was just a bit of a joke etc.
But i trust City saw something that would have been good for us.
Either way i just feel "MEH" about it.

Bit bizarre that our two top targets didn't want to choose City.

Embarrassing stuff from assna fans tonight.

Did they forget we won the treble? The only reason he's joining them lot because we pulled out.
He’d rather stay in London and play for a team of play acting time wasters than improve himself and win trophies.Fair play to him. Hope Arse seal the deal as I would not want him at City for that money

It's a bit dissapoinring to be honest
We do have a habit of not getting some of these deals over the line at times.
However as much as he's a good player, I don't think he's a great player.
Typical over hyped English player.
That said it is dissapoinring.

Aluko's theory of Pep working with Arteta to help Arsenal is clearly nonsense.

but she also said "I dont think City really wants Rice", that is imo true, based on the events, we only register our interest once Gundo announce he is leaving, and we put in a bid that was 100% to be rejected than quickly we step out of the deal.

if this was the maximum value we go for 80+10, then we were naive to think that WHU will bite as they have just rejected 75+15 from Arse the day before. everyone was like ok what the next Arse bid and then whats the next City bid but we pull out quickly. did we really want him?
kind of like putting in a 40m bid for Kane, we know its rejected the second they get it.

I actually prefer players with release clause, less of a chance of this licit malarkey, Txiki knows as well what is the price and we dont need to set maximum amounts as we know what is the maximum. sometimes can be less than release fee but never more.
Grealish had a 100m clause, was just as overpriced as Rice now we may have tried to negotite with Villa about doing it at a lesser price but they were adamant and Txiki thought OK we pay it. had he not had this release clause we may walk away.

We play the long game.
No point getting a player over our budget, that then ruins the next target.
You only have to look at United and maybe Chelsea lately to see over paying simply doesn't work.

It's like me bidding on ebay. I used to get caught up in bidding wars just to have the satisfaction of winning.
It didn't take me long to realise this was a mugs way to do things.
So i now do my research, set a budget and stick to it.

Yes now and again i regret not bidding more when i struggle to find an item anywhere near the winning price.
More often than not though i've found even better items for less money and find that more rewarding.

Evening Txiki

Arsenal will be under HUGE pressure to bring home silverware. He’s been backed massively and nearly all of his 1st choice targets have been successfully signed.

As I've said before, Arsenal will be in a battle for 4th place next May..

Liverpool and Newcastle will finish ahead of them.
