Cashless society

The only place I use cash is at the local chippy but then I end up with £'s of change that I'll never use. Suffice to say we don't have chippy often because they also don't deliver and I can't be bothered driving to the cash machine first.

My local chinese is also cash only but they do accept bank transfers under the table.... Go figure...
The only place I go to every now and again that only takes cash is the car wash - but then again it's run by some Romanian guy who reeks of weed and the car ends up dirtier than it was at the start anyway, so I rarely go there.

Saw this today..

A shocking trend among Australian consumers could be the clearest indication yet that a cashless society is only years away.
New data by Reserve Bank of Australia has revealed that the number of Australians paying by cash has more than halved since 2019.
Cash made up about 70 per cent of payments in 2007, and only 13 per cent in 2022.

Looks like cash is living on borrowed time here in Oz.

I need to get my car washed. Where is it? He sounds good.

Beggars will be carrying card machines soon.

There’s a guy sits just near my work and he’s had one of those Sum-Up machines for a couple of years.

Said it cost him £25 and if someone gives him a fiver, he gets to keep about £4.90 of it.

Says he prefers it, as it’s rare for anyone to give him more than a couple of quid cash. Whereas if someone’s going to the trouble of doing a card transaction, they normally do it for a fiver or even a tenner.

In what way is that "shocking"?

Seems to be saying that only 13% of transactions are now cash.
A few years ago it was 70%.
Is that shocking? I'm not sure.
Not in the slightest bit shocking.

Typical lazy journalism making something completely obvious out to be newsworthy!

One of the leading stories in the MEN today is about how some woman made £18k profit on selling her house. I shit you not.

I'm a bit shocked at that decline. Then again I'm easily shocked. Things don't usually decline at so fast a rate, so it's a bit shocking. I suppose it depends on your personality how shocking you find things like that..:)

The massive roll out of mobile payments and smart watches over the last 8 years or so has a lot to say in that.

I remember in about 2015 getting funny looks if I tried to pay by Apple Pay in the pub, now it’s the only thing I’ve used for about 5 years.

I've been cashless for 6 years now, use Google pay on my watch and have digital driving license so I never have take a wallet out with me.

@Blue Mist never takes his wallet out either.

My shop would be fucked if I didn't take cards. Simply because every cash machine and bank near me has shut down.
I put cash machines inside my places so the customers never have a reason to say they’ve no cash :-)
Get an extra 4€ brucie bonus every time there’s a withdrawal as well so that’s nice.
