Newcastle (A) | Wed 27th Sept | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

Newcastle want this cup. Look at the team they put out. They reached the final last year so they know they can go all the way and, like us when we were taken over, are desperate for that first piece of silverware in decades.

We didn't put out regular first-teamers, the desire wasn't really there, maybe they were concerned about a schedule clash what with the FIFA CWC coming up soon. All I know is that for long periods this City team was still having the better chances, controlled periods of the game, and it's not like we were slaughtered or "embarassed" against lower league opposition. We lost to probably one of the favourites in the competition.

It is what it is, we move on, we are still chasing 4 competitions still.

Gomes tried hard but hes not a premier league player.
Just a reminder that Gomez was in the team of the tournament for the under 21s Euros in the summer. He would start in most premier league teams. He isn't up to the level of our first team i.e. the best team in the world, but he is a quality player. Personally I was impressed with his performance last night considering he played 3 different positions.

We absolutely dominated the game apart from 10/15mins when they scored! Game time for players who needed it! Glad we out and it's like the next round was already been pre drawn with us if we won going away to the scum, the powers that be knowing we wouldn't be able to put a team out! Now they have a team who are desperate to win a cup going there! Guess what that dirty kunt Joeljnton be booked in the first half and Newcastle won't get free rein to kick them of the park!

I can't overstate how much I agree with this. God but we come over as a bunch of spoilt mardarses, sometimes. Didn't think it would come to that — not with City fans.
The first ten pages of any post-match thread should be discounted, especially when we lose. They are purely and simply about venting — “we were shit”, “Phillips was shit”, “that was shit”. We weren't shit, Phillips wasn't shit (although I now don't think he has the level to play at City, but then the level is the highest in the world at present), and that wasn't shit. We lost — 1-0 to a pretty good team taking part in the Champions League, at their own gaff. Not good, pretty disappointing… sure. We played some very good, controlled football for most of the first half. A couple of goals could have gone in, and it would have changed the game. Then they got in our faces in the second half (as you would expect), and it paid dividends for about fifteen minutes or so. That happens.
As for the media noticing when we get beaten, well, I can't say I'm all that surprised. Because, other than a semi-meaningless charity match and an end-of-season match when the league was done and dusted, we haven't been beaten for months and months. Not by anybody — not Bayern, not Real, not Arsenal — not in anything that has counted. So yes, it's a big deal on the very rare occasions that it happens. Because we are now the ogre, and everybody, without exception, likes to see the ogre trip up from time to time.
Anyway, it's my own fault. I shall stick to my usual rule of not looking at the post-match thread until the next day, and starting at about p. 20, in future.
I landed right on your post and dont need to read others.Well said r kid

It's actually the round after the next that we'd have a problem, not that it matters now and I can't say I'm in the least bothered.

I read it and was a good post however, it ignores the obvious.

The League Cup is a competition we can't accommodate this season with the ridiculous scheduling of it and the other competitions.

Footy calendar is now fucked and last seasons CL win elevated the Club more than 6 League Cup wins combined.

The League Cup is now something to go at when you have no chance of winning anything else.

It's days must be numbered for Euro competing PL teams, there is no room for it as the scheduling stands.

Best 11 out last night would have been half arsed as well.
You've summed it up perfectly. The League Cup has been on its arse for years and I think some of our success has come at the cost of us not having a good FA Cup run. You could even argue that losing to Southampton last year is what made the Treble possible. Having two domestic cup competitions in this day and age makes little sense. Whilst some might take my comment to be snobbish elitism, I would counter by saying that clubs that haven't won anything for decades don't even take it seriously. It has given us some great memories, but the reality of modern football is gravitating more towards globalism - expanded CWCs and CLs. I think last night could end up being our last match in the competition. So whilst I'm always disappointed when we lose, this one will blow over very quickly. We have a busy schedule and there just isn't room for a crack at this competition this year.

Goes to show what we have become when you see the reaction to us getting beat with a second string side in a competition no one gives two fucks about.

Im here in Italy for a few days and the commentary in Italian was great. No biased cuntish snide remarks about City.Eddie Howe sounds almost chinese when an Italian says his name..Eddie Yow..Toby Wong. Toby Wong? Toby Wong. Toby Chung? Fucking Charlie Chan.

I agree that the League Cup needs a change. Re-format it and teams who are in Europe at the time of the 2nd round draw don't take part. I'm not sure how the owners of Carabao would take that though.

Peps body language in the game was one of relaxation till the officials got under his skin, he would’ve loved the first half control & performances of Bobb etc. like you say, the sly narrative of Newcastle reserves against the treble winners was a joke, both sides were much changed
As Ive said they have 342m euros of talent on the pitch when they scored. The narrative is demonstrably bollocks.

Normally wake up pretty gutted after a defeat, but didn't really give it a moment's thought this morning. All about Wolves on Saturday now.

Same - aim this season is 4 leagues on the run and the world club champions to add to the Super cup and another good stab at the champions league.

I honestly think this time next year our team pic will show at least 3 trophies again.

Charity Shield / League / and one more!

I don't care if I'm the only one, but I'm disappointed we lost, and are out of the cup. I don't see it as a blessing in disguise, or good in the long run, I don't see it as small fry or a cup we are better off not competing for, or any of the other mighty shouts. It is another trophy at the end of the day, one a fair portion of this squad hasn't won yet, gets the hunger on if won at that stage of the season. And more importantly, it is a great chance to play young and squad players and give them experience. So no, I'm not ambivalent about it, never mind happy.

All that said, it is football, Newcastle probably deserved it more than we did in that second half, it is a loss I accept and move on. Hopefully they turn the disappointment into more focus and drive.

The pedo ring known as the BBC are having a field day with this.

It's a pathetic competition that is only cared about when you get to the quarters and think "We could win this!". Before that stage nobody cares.

First half was pretty good. My takings from the game:

- Bobb is ready to make cameos, pick up some experience with the big names but he's already really comfortable.
- Nunez and Doku are really good, ball carrying is on another level there.
- Gvardiol is starting to understand the passes required to break lines.
- Didn't expect Phillips to boss the game, but at the very least he shouldn't be shying away. At times it looks like he moves into positions purposefully to NOT be available. In other teams this is to drag someone out of position, but in the 6 you need to be the free man. Sadly, i don't think he will ever make it here.
- Grealish really struggled, nothing came off at all for him. I think he will be fine, my only worry for him is Doku is really impacting games on the left.

served its purpose by giving Kova and Jack a run out to get some match fitness in their legs and a rest for the likes of Kyle, Ruben, Erling,Eddie and now also lets be honest less games in the least most important comp where more and more players are getting injuries?
