England wasting one of the most talented squads ever assembled on Southgate

Yes, as I say. The biggest performances in the biggest matches against the best teams over a long period.
I’ve had a season ticket for almost twice as long as you, first game against West Ham in 1969. Hammers team included Hurst, Peters , Lampard and Redknapp so I’ve seen a player or two. Rice, compared to Rodri, is a plodder. Sorry to be so blunt but he will never be a world class player as long as he has a hole in his arse. World class players win matches, he doesn’t.
Congratulations on screwing Arsenal for £100m.
Brilliant and we'll said.

I felt a bit for Barry during that game. The way England were set up in that game (4-4-2) was a recipe for disaster and pace has never been his strength, it's not his style. If I recall, he also wasn't fully fit. If you put Rodri in that England team, the result would have been the same.
Well said.

That’s because England didn’t play him as a six.

We wasted two extremely good midfielders in Gerrard and Lampard too as we never worked out a system that enhanced them. It also made Scholes retire.

You think that if we had Pep in charge with those 3 that he wouldn’t have found a system or style to use them?

I do.
That needed saying.

I like you as a poster and try to respect your opinions but I don't think you are doing your reputation any favours here. Rice world class? Southgate top manager? One more to make up a trio please.
He mentioned Rednapp senior as a top player.....
That makes up the trio...
I know WHU lads ,ive watched old footage....when i was down the east end other week and asked about redknapp senior as a player...I got raised eyebrows all round.
In the Match where City beat WHU 4nil on the Boleyn Ground with Moore Peters Hurst and ....lol..redknapp... you can hear the crowd giving Harry jip

" go on the idiot "

When he has the ball on the wing, or just before he takes a corner.." idiot"

Maybe it was a Stan bowles/ Ian Bowyer situation at City where the home grown players got unfair stick in the shadow of Bell Lee Summerbee( Hurst Moore Peters) but I've never met any Football fan, not even the old school west ham fans...who have anything positive to say about Redknapp senior.
Not sure what drum BH 85 is banging here...

Can you find quote from me saying Redknapp senior was a top player

Barry wrongly gets the slack for the Ozil goal when he was only there because he tracked back after a corner and Glen Johnson abandoned that job.

It was a disaster waiting to happen but not one of his making.

Scholars didn't play as a midfielder until later in his career, Iniesta played wide left on occasions too. There's an ironic thing about the England team of moaning that players are played of position and moaning about rigid formations.

Scholars would have been a disaster in centre midfield at international level because of his poor disciplinary record and by the time he was shunted out on the left he hus fitness levels had dipped that he couldn't play the full 90.

The Italians have played midfield diamonds with four centre miss (they got to the final of euro 2012 doing this) and Alf Ramsey abandoned wingers to play 4132 in '66.

Hodgson looked like he was adopting a similar formation heading into Euro 2016 only to change tactics and come unstuck a team built in his style, due to his legacy in Sweden.

The problem wasn't just the coach it was the players. They were unwilling more than unable to play for the team, by taking onboard and implementing instructions in an unfamiliar position.

Does Pep like box-to-box midfielders?

He benched one of the best of all time.

Can’t disagree with much of that. I did see Scholes as a midfielder probably before you did, but he did transition friom a 10 to and 8 and probably learned the 6:element later on.

The players were too rigid and unwilling to adapt, but that was down to the managers more, in my opinion.

Venables and Hoddle both had continental experience, so had more knowledge and played better tactics. However, Sven and Capello had far more, but no knowledge of the English game and so maybe their voices landed on deaf ears as we knew best.

Anyway, fortunately, Pep came along and largely destroyed 4-4-2, although we seem to be playing it this season. Sort of.

Rico has got a call up! Buzzing for the lad he'll suit international football down to the ground. Will add real verve and energy to that midfield.

Oh what am I saying he'll sit on the bench watching plodders Rice and Henderson bore us all to death won't he

Plodder Rice

Plodder Rice

The only area Rice needs to improve, and it's vital if England are going to win major honours (unless someone else comes through), is his desire to run the game from deep. Get on the ball constantly, show for it, learn where to move to pick it up. It's the only weakness in his game. I'm basing that on a comparison to Rodri who is the best in the world, so high standards but still something I believe Rice could easily develop.

If Stones can stay fit and Southgate encourages him to step into midfield as Pep does, there'd be less need for him to do it as Stones would do that element. I don't think Southgate will ever let Stones do that though, I think he's much too concerned about a rigid defensive line, which is understandable when Maguire is the leading LCB in the squad.

Crazy but i would say his highest attribute is getting/wanting the ball deep, opening up space and driving forward. That's all i ever saw him do for us.

I'd say Rice biggest weakness is when he gets in that attacking third and has opportunity to pull the trigger, He could score some more goals and lacks that edge for sure.

other than that, i've always rated him as one of the best all round players since Gerrard.

That's because you know football, it seems, and don't get all of your football knowledge from playing FIFA.

cheers, but more crucially i try my best to be balanced and fair as possible regardless of what shirt a player wears.

The same Rice who has been one of England's best performers for the last few years, and was also our best player by a distance in the Euro final loss against the Italians at Wembley.

I have absolutely no doubts people like yourself wouldn't be spouting the same nonsense had Pep signed him, as he wanted to. Get a clue.

Great for Rico. Bet he's buzzing. Cant see him getting a minute of action but just getting called up will give hive a huge confidence boost. The future is bright
