"A royal commission will depoliticise it"

(Johnny Mercer)

Only if the commission could say what a stupid idea it was. And we could vote for the members of the commission. And we had a commission to appoint the chair.

Johnny Mercer is a bell end

So this proposed conscription, say an 18 year old decides they will serve the colours for a year, farewell party the night before drops a couple of E's or has a bit of weed, fails the CDT, DISHONERABLE Discharge, does that count as his "service"?
Or get an intake of new conscripts, what wages will they Get? How many chef's will be employed to feed them? How many front line troops will be redeployed to train them (arms training, PTI, Driving instructors etc)...after basic infantry training, can they specialise in a trade?
Or maybe we can use those who don't want to join the Army (other "lesser" services are also available), maybe they can be USED by Thames Water or other party donors for slave Labour every weekend for a year to clean up sewage spills

So the Deputy chairman hasn't a clue about the "big new plan"?
And the student who works every weekend to help put them through university will now have their income cut by 25%?
"They can't rely on the government"...some of these young people wouldn't know how to get these placements without state help"

There's a kind of really abject antipathy about this Conservative campaign which I actually find quite shocking. The Tories have been divided on policy and approach before many many times, but the one thing you could really say about them is that when it came to election time they would present a strong united front. Often this was in stark contrast to the more chaotic looking left of the spectrum, and that strength in unity and resolve to win was really one of few things they had going for them.

But this election seems very different. MPs not bothering to get out on the doorstep, one has even gone to Greece for a few weeks. Factionalism rife, numerous people defecting and endorsing other parties. Party members undermining Sunak at basically every opportunity, Goldsmith is out again today still blowing smoke up Boris Johnson's arse in the most pathetic way imaginable. Absolutely no life or organisation in the campaign, they are still a long way from standing candidates in every seat. Sunak is actually just the cherry on a really shitty cake.

It genuinely looks like they want to lose, and a significant number of Tories want to see the party get destroyed beyond recognition. They are into active self-harm territory.

The reason for that is simple. There used to be some decent(ish) Tory MP's - long standing and who knew how Parliamentary system worked. Johnson ousted the over Brexit and the 2019 intake was full of shallow racists like 30p - ignorant fools like Gullis - simpletons like Clarke-Stupid - sociopaths like Jenkyns - I could go on but they were important to him as loyal Brexiteers BUT.......... they did not share a view on what Brexit meant so they were also factionalists - they thought they were on a gravy train ( Scott Benton ) and now they realise its a political one night stand they are being stroppy and refusing to play for the manager or the club. The difference is that if the Chelsea players played to oust Potch its ok coz an incoming manager may offload them but they will get a well paid gig elsewhere with another club - most of those about to lose are unemployable unless they start their own business

Street - a serial winner - knows becoming a 2 time loser in a few weeks is harmful politically long term

I felt sorry for him in the local elections.

He did his best in Birmingham and comes across really well. He’s exactly the sort of well-intentioned moderate centrist conservative that deserves a chance.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Labour tapped him up.
