The reality is that most people with savings and company pensions take them to the grave, after living a long and happy retirement, even if SKI-ing (spending the kids' inheritance).
The main issues are the gamble that you won't need social care, and that this generation of pensioners (as a whole) may be the most affluent in history. Current average pensioner income is £20k p.a. but that is partly because of final salary occupational pensions that are not now available.
