I think you've hit the nail on the head, He's the closest thing to Rodri, There's not many holding midfielders that stand out these days (That includes Declan Rice), But Zubimendi looks like a fabulous player. His reading of the game is sensational.

Real have played him in a single ,and double pivot. He'll be fine most likely.Isn’t he just a 6? He doesn’t play anywhere else? If so, not sure why everyone wants him. Rodri hasn’t died and will actually be back. We need someone that can play instead of Rodri, yes. But that player must also be able to play alongside Rodri and ahead of Rodri. That flexibility is what we need, not just a pure 6. That was the whole point of wanting Guimaraes.
To me, Zubimendi is the best pure Rodri replacement, in a world where we are selling Rodri or where Rodri has to retire. But he’s not a good fit assuming Rodri’s future is still here.
Would just get this done. Could play alongside Rodri as the 2 in a 3-2-4-1 - Both players are better than just CDM, find space easily and with the quality across the 4 in front and Haaland up top think we would destroy the league , again. Provides continuity in spine of the team for another 3 or 4 seasons after Rodri. Keep a watching brief on Wharton and Ricci and others who emerge down the line. Easy this DOF stuff.

Rodri won't be anywhere close to the same player until the 2026/27 season. If we sign somebody in Jan, we're going to need a direct replacement for the next 18 months. After that we can deal with it later, if he or Amy other potential replacement is a success it's not going to be an issue. You're also ignoring the fact Rodri can easily play as a more box to box midfielder himself, he displayed creativity and an eye for goal most out and out attacking midfielders can only dream of possessing.Isn’t he just a 6?
