PL charge City for alleged breaches of financial rules

There’s a huge amount at stake. At that level, if you want the best, in commercial terms, you’ll want to give yourself the best possible chance. So I get that. Totally.

Whatever it is, he’ll be worth it. Those guys, at the very top of the Bar, are on another level to the rest of the profession. Essentially the difference between KDB and Johnjo Shelvey.
Jonjo.

There is no mismatch in terms of legal teams and money spent. The PL are throwing everything at it and we need to reciprocate.
Yeah, I get that (although GDM will probably pull you up for use of “legal teams”!). The notion that the PL themselves can’t afford expert legal representation too is frankly laughable.

Was just wondering whether Pannick himself is genuinely the very best in the business, or if he’s just simply more high profile than his peers, such as Lewis. I.e. are the margins at that level less pronounced. To carry on GDM’s analogy, is it more like the difference between having KDB or David Silva.

There’s no difference: they’re all supremely intelligent and the best of the best. Pannick has won and lost some extremely “high-stakes” cases.
This will come down to evidence.

The difference of course is that the PL seem to have up to recently at least ignored UK law and simply dismissed evidence that contradicts their decisions.
Maybe years of ignoring the UK law cannot suddenly be justified no matter how smart ones choice of legal presentation.

Pannick is as good as it gets. He has two hats, one as an advocate and one in the House of Lords. Apparently his role in the HOL is to scrutinise proposed new legislation and where necessary correct, improve and generally upgrade it. He can never change political intent but he has by all accounts intervened on huge number of Acts of Parliament. He is regarded as a leading authority in the world on the formation of new legislation. However he also loves advocacy work (especially for us), that's the only reason he isn't a judge, just his personal preference. Worryingly, he has always gravitated to challenging cases, so Real Madrid away from home and not say, a 'gimmy 3 points' like the rags at home.

Do we have any Wright Bros Kitty Hawk Bluemooners?

No, but my great grandfather was a Charles Fletcher who was an aviator from Manchester, one of the first to get something up in the air, at Platt Fields iirc. He made his own rotary engines (cue Wankel jokes). John Alcock was an assistant of his for a while before teaming up with Brown.

Yes, thanks. That's him in the bowler.

"Fletcher was sued by Gnome for unauthorised use of their design and became bankrupt." Explaining why I grew up in Droylsden and not Wilmslow with the other nouveau riche (you know who you are ....).

Probably a similar level, as you say. But Pannick likely has better coaching.

The challenge in our case is the existential risk rather than any damning evidence, I suggest.
