A quick read of the Newcastle United forums and one soon leaves with the impression that Guimaraes’ form has dropped markedly this season.

Unless Viana is being consulted and is on board with any deal, I’d be surprised if we dropped a large amount for Guimaraes or indeed any player in the winter window.

we wouldn't sign foden based on player performance threads tbf. Fans are weird.

Depending on the validity of the journalist but seen it reported in the Daily Mail and the mirror and the Newcastle mouthpiece Craig Hope says that Newcastle have to sell to buy in January?

Yeah heard Howe say their financial situation is not good. Is that simply down to PSR? Assume it is but thought they had addressed that in the summer.

We aren't buying a RB in January while we still have Walker.

The club won't do that, they will wait until the summer to move him on then buy one.

Pep will see that we have 3 options at RB (Akanji, Walker, Lewis) currently.

We definitely need a CB in January, Ake and Stones always being injured leaves us with Gvardiol, Dias and Akanji as the only fit options for 3 spots.

Then we have to buy another CB in the summer, and that RB as well. Maybe even a LB.

Defense is the biggest need for reinforcement.
If we are having to play Simpson-Pusey we need to buy.

If he’s good enough then fair play I would want to see him get the chance. If they don’t think he’s up to it (just yet perhaps, not in general) we will buy. We have too.

True, but I’ve never been convinced that Guimaraes is a suitable deputy for Rodri. He’s looked far more comfortable when Joelinton does the heavy lifting for him and that allows him more freedom.

We find ourselves in a bit of a tricky situation now. We have absolutely no idea what player Rodri will be when he finally returns, so do we look for a physical replacement (e.g. Hjulmand) that can allow us to rest and rotate Rodri more next season but without significantly changing the system, or do we go for someone with less physicality but who is more dynamic (e.g. Guimaraes). The latter might mean adapting the system but it would then be someone who can also play alongside rather than instead of Rodri.

What with the mistakes made with Phillips and Nunes and us being in between Directors of Football, I’d be surprised if they tried to find a solution in January.

I think he's an outstanding candidate for what we need, just don't see them investing that much in him as an option.

Maybe I'm wrong but think its probably just easy paper chat right now. Wont complain, he's better than the options we currently have by a distance in the deep midfield.

Yes, it seems to be that whenever Newcastle’s pecuniary plight is mentioned and they hit a rough patch, we suddenly hear talk of his release clause and their willingness to entertain offers for both Guimaraes and/or Isak. Can’t see them selling the family silver when they’re still competing across multiple fronts, and they also have a less demanding run of fixtures this month, so the circumstances in January might be quite different.

By all accounts he was pretty gutted the move didn't go through in the summer, he clearly felt we were going to pull the trigger and that has probably left him pretty gutted. He has to put on the brave face as the captain etc but he must be thinking his time is running out to get a big move.

Perhaps. However, he and his family appear settled, and he’s probably just as disappointed that Newcastle have been unable to break through their ceiling. I suspect his situation could be rather similar to Bernardo’s. People will be constantly harping on about a release clause and being unsettled and wanting away, even after he’s been with the club for years.

What mistakes with Nunes
