Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

Never understood football hooliganism or violence.

Bell-ends to a man regardless.

I’ll give you a heads up mate.

The “ Hooliganism and Violence, Maine Road, 80s/ early 90s “ thread, is full of people talking about hooliganism and violence. Mainly in the 80s and early 90s. Particularly around the Maine Road area.

Probably won’t be of any interest to you.

Correct, because when I was at Maine rd in the 80's and 90's I didn't go out of my way to get involved in hooliganism.

Surprisingly easy enough tbh.

The need to fight. Not actually be able to fight.
And it was more about the need to join together with a bunch of pals. Much in the same way that works pals, whole football clubs, streets, would join up together in ww1.
The feeling of camaraderie i guess
I take your point and i understand the distinction but I'd argue that you can enjoy the same sense of camaraderie having a few drinks and songs and adventures with your pals without engaging in a bit of mindless unskilled violence which often inconveniences and sometimes causes fear and injury to the general public.

You probably didn’t follow City away much in the 80s then.
Because walking out of ANY away ground at that time you had to have your wits about you whether you wanted to get”involved”or not

I completely agree. Its utterly nonsensical and it makes me cringe, specially when you see the likes of the middle aged villa fan stamping on celtic fans heads. Its pathetic

But im just trying to portray the understanding of the mind set if why it was done to such organised levels back in the day.
They just fuckin loved a scrap, and being honest they would be too shit scared to do it in a ring, alone

I was 10 in 1980..Coming out of grounds like Coventry,Villa & Stoke etc.. Fucking carnage. My dear old neighbour John who took us to the away matches never got involved as he had myself and his son Kev who was 12 with him but he never ran and stood his ground with the rest of the lads. I will tell you it was fucking frightening and not an experience i enjoyed. My love for City meant i had to put up with this shit at away games. In the end it was just part of it. Dreading the full time whistle because you knew what comes next.On top of that we would have been beaten on the pitch. Still I wanted to go again and again and again and still do :)

I did enjoy the rags getting leathered outside the ticket office at Maine Rd though.

Not that I was ever involved in it, as I was too soft, and a shit bag. Being honest.

But I used to love seeing it going off outside and inside the ground.

I used to join in with the chants…..

“Going off, going, off, going off!”

And.

“City aggro, City aggro, hello,”

Plenty of our lot did kick boxing at the martial arts centre on Deansgate training with the likes of Lance Lewis and Ronnie Green.......ran by the Dore brothers from Moss Side.

We even had our own boxing ring funnily enough.

If you think a lot did it just for a scrap you're totally clueless and obviously weren't there.

I was stood on Claremont Road, close to Kippax Street, with my 2 mates

The next thing I knew, it had kicked off with the Spurs hooligans who had come down Claremont Road .

At the time Spurs were on top.

I looked around and my 2 mates have vanished.

They were in the Butchers shop looking out of the window with loads of other City fans who had gone in there to get away from the fighting. I bet the butchers shop had never been so full.

As for me, I was rooted to the spot watching it kicking off all around me.

I was expecting a Spurs hooligan to have a go at me, but it never happened. I must have had one of those faces?

I wanted to pile in and kick a few Spurs lads who were on the floor, but I didn’t do it.(shit bag!)

The next thing, loads of City hooligans came running down Claremont Road, many from the pubs, and piled into the Spurs hooligans. City were now on top, and the Spurs hooligans ran down Claremont Road towards the away end, chased by the City hooligans.

Kicking someone down on the deck is a shitbag thing to do.....Spurs gave us a right hiding in the side streets when we beat them 5 - 0 once (70's) . They used to have a right nasty firm.

I was cutting through the back streets one sunny match day to get to Claremont Road, and I walked slap bang into a rowdy bunch of Middlesboro yobs who had just trashed the Clarence Pub on Wilmslow Road ... there was about 40 of the rough lookin' fkers, 15 yards or so, coming right towards of me .... I didn't know whether to start praying, carry on walking, or do a runner back in the direction i'd come from, but it was a really nerve wracking situation, and especially as a few of them were eyeing me up!

Luckily for me someone had alerted the cops to their threatening presence outside the nearby pub, and four vanloads of police came hurtling down the street, and jumped out of the vans to encircle the Boro yobs ..... i counted my blessings, and took the opportunity to scarper off down the nearest alleyway amidst all the commotion!!
