The Labour Government

Anyone who thinks and believes any of this “by the end of this parliament” bullshit is away with the fairies.

We are being fucking fleeced by energy companies and Labour said they would put a stop to it.

They haven’t and they won’t. Make your own mind up about accusing them of lying about tbh.

Sorry if my point wasn't clear enough.

The reason that prices are going up is because the price companies buy energy has gone up. That's out of Labour's control, and that's what they've said they want to change.

The "lie" was that they said they would change the system so that we get more of our power from electricity that is produced in the UK, without relying as much on overseas gas. That clearly isn't some kind of switch you flick, or something that changes overnight with a stroke of a pen, hence the commitment to do it by the end of this Parliament. You can judge them on how successful they are at the next election, but it's pointless saying after a few months that it's not happened.

They didn't say that they would reduce prices immediately, so the stuff about a "lie" is the bullshit, and Stephen Flynn is well aware of that.

Superb speech, well done Starmer.
Radio 4 program the world at one already pulling holes in his numbers. They said the £13.6B annual increase in defence spending he quoted, was actually equivalent to the entire ODB budget not a cut of 0.2%!

Pitty you would hope he would have got his figures right.

The 0.2% of GDP makes sense as it's a 0.2% increase in the defence budget from 2.3% to 2.5% (and a cut in the ODB from 0.5% to 0.3%).

But 0.2% of GDP doesn't appear to be anything close to £13b, so not sure what's going on.

.... yet they are all turning huge profits and paying handsome dividends??

Why is the regulator allowing them to increase prices when there is no need to..... apart from pure greed?

I agree partly - but that's a separate issue to claiming they lied when the issue is with the current system.

If you think OFGEM needs reforming, you're not alone. There's a review of OFGEM, currently underway by Labour, which was announced just before Xmas, and the consultation period isn't due to finish for another few days.

If you want things to change, you can always add to the evidence here: https://www.gov.uk/government/calls-for-evidence/review-of-ofgem-call-for-evidence

So he can cut foreign aid to fuel the war but he can’t cut it to help pensioners the ****

Yay! more bombs.

And as per, being paid for by those with least.
It's not being paid for by anyone. The UK fiscal deficit is £120bn so for everything we do pay it's still not enough by that amount irrespective of what savings are made.

It's a great time to put your pension into gilts and arms...

I think its called PANIC

Really quite embarrassing that he makes what he wants to be seen as a major announcement on defence expenditure and still manages to get his numbers completely wrong.

Not exactly difficult; 0.2% of GDP is £5.7bn. By 2027 it will be a slightly larger number, but nothing like £13bn.

Special mention should be made to the gormless Rachel Reeves - sat there nodding along when she should really know that 0.2% of GDP is nothing like £13bn.
