Prostate cancer

I read that modern medicine is coming round to the idea that Prostate cancer is one of the most benign and might be best left alone because the cure can be worse than the disease.
Definitely not with respect Mr G , that’s not the case for those who get diagnosed , as myself has been twice gone through the mill with prostate cancer the threat of bone cancer looms after PC it gets that sort of publicity as it’s seen as a “ old man’s disease “ so why put them through uncomfortable treatment.I was 52 when got diagnosed my oncologist said I’d had it for at least two years. Hopefully I’ll be cured from this disease.
As always up the blues .
Keep fighting this horrid disease.

Meant to post an update on this sooner. Basically, my post-scan appointment on 29th January went pretty well. They think it’s unlikely that I’ve got it but can’t totally rule it out off the scan. The figures are below the threshold for doing a biopsy so they’re going to monitor it. They calculate it as PSA divided by weight of prostate (in grams) and if it’s 0.15 or above then they recommend a biopsy. My PSA was 4.6 and the weight of my prostate is 61 grams so it came out at about 0.075. I’ll have my PSA checked again in 6 months and if no real cause for concern then it will probably revert to 12 monthly checks after that.

My specialist that that I needed something doing about mine sooner or later.

The treatment programme that I am on is is certainly not worse than the disease - apart from hot flushes I'm living a normal life.

You only have to look at the case of Chris Hoy to see how bad it can get if undetected.

If you are in ANY doubt, which you may be given your questions, I'd go to the doctors and ask for a PSA test as soon as possible. I reckon my test has saved my life and allowed me to go on living it 99.9% normally.

I've history myself in this department.
I was treated for prostatitis as late teenager.
After waking up in the middle of the night with pains in the region, i went through numerous doctors appointments until i was told by the doctor i was wanking too much. I demanded to see a consulatant and after a camera up the doodah, i was told i had a cyst. That fucking thing has caused me eternal discomfort and a few years ago, the discomfort and restricted waterworks returned,
Another trip to the docs, a finger up the bum and a trip to the local hospital for a ultrasound gave me the all clear.
I asked about the diagnosis and a PSA test and was told by both doctor and hospital pretty much what was in the link.

What scares me is that one day, this dull ache and plumbing problem will no longer be "Just a cyst" and turn into something else.

I've more than enough kids so they can have the damn thing for all i care.

Bit of a catch up here
My latest psa results have come through today from Christie’s and it’s very positive
0.1ug/L which is undetectable so obviously over the m (blue)moon with this especially with after it returned. Go back for life now every six months. But I’m in very good hands.
Unfortunately I’ve developed a double hernia due to the prostectomy so I’ll have to delay the fundraiser get together walk , but we’ll all get a date between us and do it.
Been quiet of late on here so hopefully those effected are doing well and keeping positive.
Let’s all keep this thread alive and keep it going , especially for those who might be new to it.
As always the help and support you’ve shown to one another is quite unbelievable
The shit us city lads and lasses receive on social media is off the scale one look on here would shame the lot of them.
Keep it up Blues and let’s keep going .

Thank you to all take care.
Gary.

Great news Gary.

I’m pretty much in the same boat as you. Just a refresher, I had my brachytherapy/radiotherapy September/October last year and I’m continuing with the hormone injections and Abiraterone. My last few readings have been undetectable (< 0.1).

Overall, I’m really happy with my treatment, which has given me minor side effects. But it’s probably important to be honest and say that I am feeling the medication a bit now. I feel like I’ve hit a wall in the last few weeks and I’m really tired a lot of the time. Doesn’t stop me doing what I want to do, but it can be a bit of a slog and leave you drained.

But I echo what you say: this thread has been a great help and we should bump it every so often just to keep it visible.

Onwards and upwards and if you are reading this and haven’t had the test - get tested!

First time I’ve looked in here as, well done Rob and other on your fight against it.
I can’t bring myself to google as I’ve been having lower back pain and testicular pain, kidney results come back good and other blood samples- but doctor mentioned prostate and recommenced a scan which I have booked in and given me antibiotics as it’s likely a bacterial infection going on, but my first taste at a health scare and some dreaded thoughts.

One thing I’ve learned in this last year is that it’s better to get an early diagnosis than live in ignorance.

You’d be young to be looking at PC but obviously it can happen, so it’s best to get it checked.
I didn’t have any pain before diagnosis but I can’t comment on what the general status is for others diagnosed.

Best of luck with the scans and any other tests and hopefully it’s something and nothing.
