The Labour Government

The entire tax debate in this country is fucked. Labour should be hammering 2 things every single time any of them is in front of a camera.

We pay the lowest taxes in Western Europe.

We’re paying lower taxes now than we have since the 1970s.

The entire premise that we’re being taxed to death is a bullshit right wing owned media driven fantasy.

We’re feeling poorer because the cost of living has gone up because energy companies have been allowed to use world events (Covid, Ukraine) to justify price hikes and pull in record breaking profits from the British public and driving up costs of everything from heating our homes to restaurants and food production.

But instead of dealing with that, lowering cost of living so we can afford the tax rises that will fund the government spending people want, they’ll just keep letting the conservatives and reform own the narrative around tax and rise taxes just enough to do nothing for anyone.

To a certain degree it's

Vote Tory get Tory
Vote Labour get Tory lite
Vote Reform get barking Tory
Vote Lib Dem get euro Tory

Vote Green get enlightened:-)

Maybe we are just that type of country :-(

Would that be one of those Mickey Mouse degrees?

Sort of…

As an overall average “we” currently (soon to change) do pay the lowest tax compared to other European nations.

But…

The UK’s income tax is about on par with Europe.

Our NI is significantly lower than Europe (about half)

The UK raises more tax from non payroll activities than the rest of Europe.

Our top earners pay more than their European equivalent in some of the comparable countries such as Germany and Italy.

Our bottom earners pay less income tax in UK than elsewhere in Europe.

Our top rate of tax is higher than the European average.

The UK has one of the most progressive tax systems in Europe

You are absolutely spot on is people feeling poorer. Since 2010 the bottom 40% of households and the top 10% have been hit the hardest with both the bottom and top 10% performing the worst.

Well done to the rebel labour MPs. Sounds like another u turn from Starmer on the way. Who is advising him.

the line that those MP's supporting the bill is - even from some Tories - that the £48bn a year benefits bill for the sick and disabled is unsustainable.

However no mention of the growing £175bn a year spend on pensioner benefits.

BBC understatement ...

UK buying planes that can drop tactical nuclear weapons "could be controversial"....

Then saying they could only be used with US consent. Yeah, not just for deterrence then.

Just imagine, they'll be calling it terrorism to protest about it.
Not sure I believe the need for US consent to use

I'm wondering what pensioner benefits they can cancel that cures UK plc?

Loads which they would applaud and defend right up to the point Starmer back tracked again and they denied ever supporting it anyway.

Big week next week, lots of arm bending, promises, threats.

Oh for a system where as an MP you could just vote in what you believed rather than what you're told.

With collective responsibility comes collective back tracking.

Free thinkers need not apply.

Is it pick on a pensioner day again?

No, but it is not unreasonable to point out why is giving a pensioner on £19k a year a £200 bung at Xmas okay, but we can’t afford to pay carers an allowance (to use the earlier example).

Perhaps pensioners who do not need the £200 bung could opt out and help out those less fortunate?
