The Labour Government

To your point not sure anyone really knows as there's no accurate sources of data, the ONS says it will take till 2027 to know any impact. As for what type of rich person is leaving (in terms of ones who productively invest in the UK and those whose wealth is non productive for the country) I think there's even less idea what's happening.

Indeed - and the people who produce this report, apparently take their data from a small, unrepresentative sample of people they "think" are millionaires, and look at where they put down as their main work location on LinkedIn.

They also seem either not to understand how samples work, or just don't care if it's accurate (which I suspect is the case*), as they're extrapolating a tiny sample to the whole population, despite the sample being unrepresentative. So, last year they predicted around 9000 net would leave, based on around 0.008% of "millionaires" in their sample changing their work location (about 50 people). Given that 9000 is 1.5% of their estimate of total millionaires, the margin of error would make the figure almost pointless, even if the sample was representative. Yet they admit that they do nothing at all to make it representative - making it not much more accurate than throwing a dart at a board.

It's essentially the good old advertisement dressed up as news. A few decades ago, newspapers would have people who understood this, and would have seen through it. Now we have people who just need to fill pages, and are happy to reprint whatever rubbish they get sent.

EDIT: *I've just listened to an interview with the "researchers", and I was wrong. He genuinely doesn't know how samples work.

and? around 930,000 years ago, a wide natural land bridge joined southeast Britain to what was then mainland Europe - we weren't around then to fk it all up
Oh the nutters really are ganging up tonight. I wonder what caused Britain and Europe to seperate, was it global warming-no...

  • Land Bridge and Megaflood:
For much of the Stone Age, Britain was connected to mainland Europe by a land bridge. Around 450,000 years ago, a massive megaflood, possibly triggered by a lake bursting its banks, carved out the English Channel. This event, sometimes referred to as "Brexit 1.0," permanently separated Britain from the continent during interglacial periods with high sea levels.

  • Tsunami from the Storegga Slide:
About 8,200 years ago, a large tsunami caused by a submarine landslide off the coast of Norway, known as the Storegga Slide, struck Doggerland, a landmass connecting Britain to Europe. The tsunami is believed to have flooded much of Doggerland, contributing to Britain's final isolation.

  • Rising Sea Levels:
Following the glacial periods of the last Ice Age, melting ice caused sea levels to rise, further inundating the land and solidifying Britain's insular position.

It's actually a foolproof system.

You impose huge taxes on the mega-rich and use that money to pay for services. Then when there are no more mega-rich to tax, you pay for services by taxing-...oh.

Most of the mega rich aren’t actually that mobile. Spain and Switzerland have both shown it can work.

Personally, although we don’t have the system for it, I’d rather see more done on shortening the gap in pay and see less money in the hands of so few. Wouldn’t need a wealth tax then.

This Labour govt have certainly walked into a pile of shite left behind by a gang who were in power for too long despite the mess the Tories were making with their constant infighting and bollocks and changes of leadership. They were too comfy at it and it showed. Some unrest and pressure in the govt is only a good thing. Keep everyone attuned and at it, and not entitled

4" in 32 years. Calamity. How on earth will we cope? Carrying on like this and by 2100 it could be a whole foot!
And Antartica's ice wall has just grown for the first time in decades, according to NASA.

It's as if the planet just does what it does regardless of the creatures crawling on it's surface.

I read now that this inept government are now flirting with wealth taxes again. Not deterred by the experience of France, Sweden, Germany, and Denmark that introduced wealth taxes, only to later repeal them because they didn't work.

Didn't raise anything like the projected revenues, caused people and capital to leave the country and were complex and expensive to administer.

Thank yuu four pointing that out. No apolugy required but Ashton is my first langwage. I'll endevur to en-sure my fingers hit the rite keys 100% of the tyme in future. Count!!

Another hole to dig. You haven't actually looked at the NASA site.

AI says (before it kills us all):

The statement that Antarctica's ice wall has just grown for the first time in decades is not accurate. While there have been fluctuations in Antarctic sea ice extent, with some years showing record maximums, there is no evidence to support the claim of a general growth of an "ice wall". In fact, some parts of Antarctica, like the West Antarctic Peninsula, have experienced significant warming and ice loss.

...if only you and your arrogant tide-turning Cnuts has been around years ago, we could have saved the old sabre-tooth, what d'ya reckon? Meanwhile, I'll leave you to keep applying that Band-Aid to the terminal cancer patient that is Earth - good luck with that

I do sometimes wish I'd been here years ago, that way I wouldn't have to read your bollocks.

Anyway, I'll pop over to Thailand again in the winter for a couple of months, go business class( without off setting the CO2 as I've no kids to worry about), use lots of A/C whilst there, enjoy the pool every hour or so, pay little on expensive utilities here at home and watch City on IPTV. After all AI is gonna get me long before the climate does. Oh, and I'll report back on the rising sea levels there. We may even go on a jungle trek to find the sabre-tooth Tiger-or one of its' cousins.

Arrogant? moi?....lol

What do you have planned for the long winter months?

These UK billion/millionaires that promote 'patriotism'. Yet don't want to contribute to the country they profess to love.

You'd think if they were patriotic they'd be proud to donate more of their money. Be it in paying more tax, or paying to build up national infrastructure and get it named after them.

Funny how the ones that exploit us want to leave when they have to pull their weight. As in spend the money they taken from us through our own taxpaying money via government contracts.

Er, precisely the point.

The Earth is a balanced system. It is full of negative feedback loops that regulate things and keep it stable. Were that not the case, the climate would have spiralled out of control - turning into an ice ball, or all the atmosphere boiling off - billions of years ago. It hasn't.

Think of it like a bowl spinning on top of a stick. If the bowl is the normal way up, balanced precariously, and you knock the bowl and it falls off. With the bowl upside down, it wobbles but then settles down again and stays on. It's a stable system. Same with the earth: increase CO2, you increase plant growth, which accelerates CO2 absorption and things stabilise again.

We've dumped a shed load of CO2 into the atmosphere recently but it's still at 426 parts per million. That 0.0426%. It's a pitifully small amount. 500 million years ago, it was more than 10x this amount, and life is still here.

Anyway, since we've increased CO2 by 50% over the last 200 years, it takes the planet time to adjust. In another 100 years or so, it will have mopped up all the excess CO2 and temperatures will start dropping again. We'll possibly end up with another mini ice age.

This is not just some bollocks on a football forum, btw. You can read up about it if you like.

Lol, Well done on your academic achievements.
Unless anyone can beat that I think that at least by Bluemoon standards that must confer expert status to Chippy.

Instead of acknowledging how he got that completely wrong he will instead ignore.

So for a bit of context.
The once mighty UK Private pensions industry which was destroyed by Gordon Brown is now being " asked" nay forced to invest 10% of their holdings into UK private assets e.g Company start ups , infrastructure projects etc to try and find the growth in the economy that the government promised.
Firstly , thats a bit rich from a Labour Party who when last in government forced the same Pension funds to invest in less riskier assets eg. Government bonds. A complete about turn.
Secondly, the additional £29,000 in the headline is the extreme scenario, for an average pot it is £5 -6k.
Thirdly, as usual the government is happy to let the private sector take the strain, it is the pensions of the private sector that she is prepared to risk whilst leaving the public sector on guaranteed defined benefit schemes that. will pay out from the taxpayers pocket no matter what.
That said there is some low hanging fruit in there that makes sense e.g small pot consolidation etc.

They will be free to travel, work and live where they wish free of Government restrictions and control. It’s called Freedom of Movement for a reason.

It currently operates within 33 European countries, otherwise known as the Schengen Zone. You can read about it here.

I have mentioned before Bob that I doubt your commitment to open borders would survive half a dozen Roma families moving into your road, actually I doubt it would take half a dozen.
Am I wrong ?
If you found your new Roma neighbours moving next door would you be straight round with a nice bottle of red and a bunch of flowers to welcome them?
Would you organise some integration classes for them so hopefully you could get them to refrain from spitting , defecating and urinating in your drive ? All in the name of open borders after all . Or would you sell up ?
I suspect you have never contemplated any of it because it is quite simply something you don't expect to ever contend with, however it is something you are happy for those less fortunate than yourself to have to suffer. Yet for those that have their lives blighted by immigration you have no empathy and offer crassly worded support for open borders.

How is your beloved EU dealing with open borders ? .
Paying the Libyan security forces to murder, torture, rape and terrorise African migrants in an attempt to prevent them reaching the Mediterranean coast.
The Eastern states are simply refusing migrants, asylum or not.
Poland sending 5,000 troops to their border with Germany to prevent migration flows, supported by self formed citizen groups.
The whole EU is inflamed with tension on migration.
But not an issue for you, you support open borders and its all working out fine.
Its like the last 30 years didn't happen.
