The Labour Government

The eternal cry of the capitalist. Abolish child labour laws? Can't afford that. A ten hour day? Can't afford that. Factory Act? Can't afford that. (19th century law changes promoted by Tories motivated by Christian ethics.)
A full weekend off? Can't afford that. Minimum wage? Can't afford that.
Capitalists, eh?

All they’re interested in is artificially inflating the value of their assets without doing anything productive or helping the working classes. And then when they sell up so that they can spend their money on frivolous, materialistic items, they do so without paying their fair share of taxes. Sickening.

A heard about a particularly harrowing case the other day. Somebody bumped up the value of a house to £650k - far above what it was actually worth - so that they could sell a share of it to a vulnerable person and go off buying property in some bourgeois enclave on the capitalist southern coast. And they didn’t even pay all the taxes they owed.

Shameless behaviour.

No it doesnt ..... they simply pass on the bill to the consumer.

I know. All business will just pass it on or freeze recruitment.

That’s the point, it’s a shit policy.

It’s also seeing the level of unemployment rise, something that has happened every month under this government so it just puts costs elsewhere into the system.

It’s not a net position for the exchequer though.I’m really not sure what the alternative should have been, given personal tax rises would have been unpalatable too.

You do have to look at the NIC decision in net terms for the exchequer.

The NIC increase has clearly boosted inflation, and the MPC has explicitly referenced it as a factor against easing policy further.

A one percentage point increase in RPI inflation costs an additional £8bn in debt interest payments, as does Bank Rate being a percentage point above the OBR’s forecast, thanks to the APF.

So the idea that the NIC increase is actually improving the fiscal position by the sort of figures the government suggested isn’t really credible.

But still a net benefit?

This is a decent idea. Returning failed asylum seekers who are undocumented is very tricky and so this makes a lot of sense

so places like Afghanistan and Iran who we don't have any serious diplomatic links with and to whom we issue next to no Visa's to be they student or travel but who's citizens make up a sizeable chuck of the boat crossings will continue to get no Visa's. How's that a deterrent? As for undocumented asylum seekers if they are undocumented and we tell a country "these are your people here have them back" and they say "can you prove it?" What then?

Yea it’s not perfect. I’ve worked in this area though. It is very hard, for instance, to document Indian and Pakistani nationals. Harder than you’d think. This move says “fine ok if you don’t help us we don’t help you.”

Bloody hell that is how to fiddle figures. No mention of weather conditions or the previous 7 days.
Agreed. But I just think it’s an interesting angle to talk about sharing good news.
Whether it’s Trump or Biden, whether it’s Labour or Conservative, they will all have achieved some successes, but you don’t (well, I don’t) feel like you hear enough about them.

I hear too much about holding people accountable, about holding their feet to the flame etc with all politicians and political parties. Yes there’s a place for that, but there isn’t enough positive news around about things that do improve. That’s where politics goes wrong for me, when it’s all about what’s gone wrong.

With media outlets, and social media and their opponents, all taking chunks nowadays, it’s a miracle any politician or party ever gets re-elected.

then it become all a bit school playground

So when we get to the end of the year and the figures are record breaking and some minister points out how good the weather was for much of the spring and summer contributing to the high numbers, you'll be nodding your head in agreement.

According to and article on radio the other day the actual number of boats in August was the lowest since 2019, but the ones that did cross were carrying more people.

As I say I think it’s a useful idea which would move things on from where they are now

personally they fucked up from the start with the WFA. Since then inexplicably they have chased the votes of people who will never vote for them and frankly they shouldn't need. They have 4 years to turn things around but I am doubtful that brand Starmer could win them the next election now. All the time, all the effort and all the money wasted when they could have devoted it all to going further and faster as they always say.
