The Conservative Party

I do wonder where all the centrist / Cameroon tory voters are? The Lib Dem’s? Labour?

If they had a Rory Stewart type figure in I’d consider voting for them, especially given Labour seem to be disappointing.

Surely there are more votes to be won in the centre ground than fighting with the fringe nutters…
Rory has just been regretting the loss of of Tories like him on his podcast....the 'loss leaders'.

Hopefully they'll be enough Greens in the next parliament to counter reform and the Lib Dems then have a chance of pushing PR through.

Scrapping stamp duty is classic tax cutting tory policy - it’s appealing to me personally - but how the hell they plan to pay for it when the country is skint and on its arse is beyond me.

It’s a nonsense, a bit of a crowd pleaser to keep her in the job for another few weeks.

Scrapping stamp duty will only benefit the wealthy.

You pay stamp duty on any property over 125k don’t you?

Correct me if I’ve missed something - only skim read the piece on the BBC - but buying a £125k house doesn’t make you “wealthy”. It’s first time buyer territory.

Hard to find a property cheaper than that that isn’t full of asbestos and bullet holes these days.

The problem I have with PR is that it gives the fringe nutters an even louder voice.

I agree the current system needs fixing though.

I wish I had an answer!

The higher the cost of the property the higher rate of stamp duty you pay

  • The tax is calculated in bands, meaning you pay different rates on different portions of the property price. For example, as of April 2025:
  • 0% on the first £125,000
  • 2% on the portion from £125,001 to £250,000
  • 5% on the portion from £250,001 to £925,000
  • Higher rates apply for properties above these thresholds

First time buyers are able to avoid stamp duty on properties up to £300,000 , they pay a reduced rate between £300,001 and £500.000 (if the property exceeds this amount then 5% rate applies

So scrapping it helps those that buy the larger more expensive properties the most. If it was my policy I'd scrap it up to £250.000 and increase it above that limit.

Not really true though, is it?

Are people buying a house for four, five hundred grand genuinely wealthy?

I would expect these types of buyers to be the most constrained in terms of raising their cash deposits, so the removal of stamp duty could actually have an unusually large benefit for them.

Not just the wealthy, but certainly the wealthy,(whatever that actually means), will benefit more.

It's all relative. If you haven't got a pot to piss in, someone affording a property worth £500,000 is probably seen as wealthy.

Yes, certainly where I live.

Just seen the latest Party Political Broadcast from the Tories. Badenoch says she has 3 children so she understands the compromises families are having to make at the moment........that's nice for the multimillionaire!!
