Keir Starmer

I agree with your general comment. Effective communication e.g. in presentations is critical and from my experience often works best if the speaker can manage a bit of humour. The best presenter at Oracle when I worked there was a Scottish bloke whose name escapes me but he used to have the audience roaring with laughter at the beginning of his presentations. We used to actively look forward to them and listen intently throughout.

Having said all of that, I think Starmer doesn't give it you "straight". I think he's a bare-faced liar (as many of them are), he's just rubbish at it. People have come to not believe a word he says.

And yet people listen to Farage and see what exactly ?

Trump lite !

Whatever mate. Suggest you vote for a different party then.
I will vote anyone but them

You seem a little confused. I saw you post about Minford yet you’re going to vote for the same people. And you refuse to engage in any of my points

Who is Minford?

Sorry mate I'm just not up for an argument. No-one ever changes their mind on here under any circumstances. We just post opinions and others contradict them. Rinse and repeat.

The media's role in all this is disgraceful. Trying to create a resignation story rather than reporting the news is disgusting. Shouting at and haranging Cabinet Ministers walking down Downing Street this morning is frankly shameful. I'm no fan of Starmer but the media in this country has a lot to answer for.
From every angle. The BBC is an utter disgrace of an organisation with its endless lobbying about subjects it's taken a position on, and blatant bias across various topics. It's supposed to be our state-run, objective news outlet not a fucking lobby group.

I agree with you. People say Farage is a great communicator but I don't see it. I think he's rank average / poor but his popularity suggests otherwise.

PS I think Trump is shit at it as well.
Why do you think he's popular.

Is it Brexit will be the best thing to ever happen to this country, Which got the majority on board?

There has to be One major thing he's saying over and over again to get the same ilk of folk to vote for him?

What do you reckon it is?

That's his problem. That, and he and his team being woeful when it comes to the media and communication.

Boat crossings, for example, are way down year on year but hardly anyone knows about it.

It's a shame that loudmouth grifters on the far-right and far-left get all the attention.
The majority of that is the media preferring to report anything negative.

I can only speculate of course but here's my opinion FWIW.

1. I think rightly or wrongly, there is a large faction of our society who are deeply concerned about the levels of immigration. A small minority are just nasty racists, but trying to pretend they all far right thugs is just daft. There's millions of Brits who are worried that our Britishness is slowly being eroded away. There's also obviously concerns about unvetted illegals roaming the streets etc, whether that is statistically significant or not, it's emotive and it resonates. Farage has tapped into these concerns.

2. The public were sick and tired of the Tories, who were a shit show for much of their 14 year tenure. Labour finally got in on a landslide, not because people like Labour particularly, but because they thought "No more of this rubbish".

But after 2 years, what we have got is "More of this rubbish". Farage appeals to a very large cohort who have now given up with both main parties.

There are some truths:
Starmer is a shit ineffectual leader.
The press in this country were attack dogs on a Labour government from day 1
Labour Government have done some good stuff but communicated it very poorly
Labour Government have done far to little to make the electorate feel 'better' quickly. If they had, some of the cock ups would have been forgiven
All of the above needs to be strongly addressed by whoever takes over.
It won't be.

It's interesting how the struggle for power is playing out and it just proves how hopelessly divided we are.

Labour did win a big majority but that hasn't translated into authority because the true mandate is wafer thin and maybe non-existent. I don't see how they can claw this back without a huge change in leader and there are no candidates except perhaps Burnham who seem to represent that.

So whether it's Starmer or anyone else the fact is any candidate is going to be firefighting and clinging onto a handful of fairy dust. Starmer has been in that place for years, his appeal is rock bottom and it isn't necessarily because of him, it's because he won an election off the back of another party collapsing.

If Starmer goes then it is simply a question of who should kick the can down the road until the game is up in 2029.

Jess Phillips resignation statement in full

Dear Keir
I want to start by first saying that we have worked closely together on Violence Against Women and Girls for many years and I have no doubt you have genuine knowledge and desire to rectify this dreadful social ill. We have started to make steps towards change whilst in government and I have been grateful for your support.
However, it would be remiss of me not to say that real change and direction in this area usually came from threats made by me in light of catastrophic mistakes. The Mandelson saga whenever it bubbled up made Number 10 kick into gear on the subject in order to prove our credentials. I will never waste a crisis to make advancements for women and girls and so demands were made and some were met.
I think you are a good man fundamentally, who cares about the right things however I have seen first-hand how that is not enough. The desire not to have an argument means we rarely make an argument, leaving opportunities for progress stalled and delayed.
Over a year ago I presented solutions, long worked on by brilliant civil servants that would end the ability for children in the UK to take naked images of themselves. 91% of online child sex abuse is self-generated by children groomed, tricked and exploited in to abuse. The technology exists to stop children being able to take naked images of themselves. We could make this possible on every phone and device in the country. We could stop this abuse. It has taken me a year to get you to agree to even threaten to legislate in this space. Not legislate, just threaten. This is the definition of incremental change. Nothing bold about it. The announcement was meant to be in March, I’m still on a promise this will happen in June, I’ve given up believing it. How many children were left without a safety net in the time we dilly dallied and worried about tech bosses?
This is just one example.Labour governments come around rarely is the constant refrain at the moment. It’s true they are precious. Every Labour government in my and my family’s lifetime has forged progress that changed our country and the world for the better. I know you care deeply, but deeds, not words are what matter. I’m not sure we are grasping this rare opportunity with the gusto that’s needed and I cannot keep waiting around for a crisis to push for faster progress.
Decency is vital, calm curiosity is also needed, but so too are fight and drive required. Have a row, push back, make arguments, bring people along. Standing up and being counted can’t always be workshopped. Politics is as much about feelings as policy, especially at the moment.
I want a Labour government to work and I will strive as I always have for its success and popularity, but I’m not seeing the change I think I, and the country expect, and so cannot continue to serve as a minister under the current leadership.
