How do you know what's being played out? How do you know that the deal hasn't been done for a while and this is all just for the media?

The answer is that you don't but are making the huge mistake of taking everything reported in the media at face value.

How do you think they get news of these things? Someone briefs them, that's how. And that someone can say anything they want to ensure the press publish the story they want to put across. And the story Liverpool want to put across is that Sterling's a greedy bastard who should be paying them for the privilege of playing for the greatest club in world football history.

But if he doesn't want to, then they're going to screw that horrible, classless, nouveau-riche club Man City for every penny they can because they're hard nosed businessmen who no one ever takes advantage of and also own the classiest, most dignified club in world football with a great young manager who is going to win everything it's possible to win.

Perhaps I've gone a little OTT here but I'm sure you get the picture.
I do get the picture, but I just find it a little hard to believe.

Every ex Liverpool player on the planet had their say 2-3 weeks ago so nothing would really change in regards to them think he's a money grabber.

Anybody who leaves Liverpool/Arsenal to us will be labelled that, even the tea lady. So I'm not sure how dragging it out for a month or so will add to that view.

I suppose the fact is if it is playing out then I don't really understand what the additional gains on either side would be.

There are so many variables involved in this, which we are not privy to.

I'm of the mindset that City want things done early, and I'll only start to express a modicum of concern if signings aren't being finalised before the players return to pre-season, and particularly before we jet off to Oz, as that is where we begin prep for pre-season in full and I wouldn't want new signings to be behind the game. Until then, I don't see any issue, as none of the signings would be missing out on anything.

Furthermore, we're missing nuances, like City trying to negotiate with other clubs under the pretence of only bidding a smaller amount for Sterling, and playing tough in the market, and Liverpool likewise trying to play tough on their own transfer targets, pretending they haven't got as large a sum as expected for Sterling. They were burned in the market last summer, they're going to be more careful this time around. I think some of that politics is playing out, and we just have to be patient.

Two questions to the panickers:

What other major deals have been concluded around Europe so far, or even which of our challengers face actually strengthened?

If Sterling had signed last week, he'd still be on his holidays and still couldn't be registered with us until July 1st, so what would we have gained?

It certainly has that kind of feel to it. I doubt the negotiations only started the week before last when the first rejected bid was reported. It appears to me that Sterling agreed to come to us months ago and we've possibly been in discussions with Liverpool for almost as long.

It wouldn't be any surprise if this was the case. The media like to create scenarios to satisfy their readership but the reality is probably either they don't have a clue what's going on or, they know exactly what's going on but it doesn't suit their purpose to report it truthfully. Both clubs must have known for months where Milner was going and Liverpool must have know that Sterling wanted to leave so there was every opportunity to open dialogue ages ago.

For all we know City may have other targets. When you get to the £40m frame a lot of players come into the equation. Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG have not moved yet. There are several World Class players who might become available. Sterling is potential, but the fee Liverpool are looking for, puts him in the Wold Class bracket. We can sort the home grown rule out by buying players like Roberts.

From an early understanding of Tolmies. the restructuring of the FFP goalposts are a factor in the transfer dealings we want to do yes

Hi Graceboy, thanks for your comments.....genuine question.....if FFP goalposts are a factor and the FFP meetings don't go well for us at the end of the month....you think there is a chance, we wont be able to go after Sterling, Pogba AND De Bruyne anyway due to the amounts that would cost? thanks

Kondogbia to Inter

Depay to Rags

The fact that no one else has moved for the lad makes me think that it's all but done. ..surely with the potential sterling has the likes of Chelsea etc would be sniffing

Off the top of my head Depay, Dybala, Mandzukic, Cech, Kondogbia, Vidal, Aurier, Kruse, Danilo

Bogdan to Liverpool

Liverpool have a track record in sticking to their guns (see Suarez, Torres and Agger). Unfortunately they are too big a club to be bossed by player power and they certainly don't need the money, this isn't like trying to bully Everton for Lescott. If I'm wrong I don't even think Sterling has handed an official transfer request in? which weakens our bargaining position.

Bottom line is that the numbers will need to be adding upto 50m (cash plus add ons) for Liverpool to say yes. I suspect the hold up in the meantime is that we are exploring all other playing options before we go back to them and hand over the cheque.

I can see your point but I will be amazed if we back out now.

With regard to any FFP changes, UEFA would have to give a grace period as they did when FFP first came out. Was it two years to get your house in order? I can't remember, but either way they couldn't just say with immediate effect this is happening. What they could do is remove the Barça, PSG sanctions which would start a bidding war for Pogba, but otherwise I'd say we'd still splash the cash & have a few windows to make back the money & balance our books... & I don't see that being an issue.

Incidentally, does anyone have any comparisons between sterling and silva at that age? And maybe hazard?

This is what Silva had achieved when he was 20:
Silva returned to Valencia in the summer of 2006, becoming an automatic first-choice despite his young age of 20. In two seasons combined, he only missed six matches and netted 14 goals (his first league goal coming on 5 November 2006 in a 1–1 draw at RCD Espanyol). In August 2008, he extended his contract by five years, amidst interest of several Premier League teams.[9] He won the Copa del Rey 2008, his first title in Spain.
