James McCarthy

£20m isn't a bad price imo, he's a very tidy player and would fit in well with our style of play. It's probably £5m more than he's worth, but we could do with a HG midfielder so he's easily worth that premium as it would completely free us up to go after whichever foreign players we wanted for the two or three other positions we're after. Unlike Delph, I think McCarthy is actually good enough to play for us regularly, so I'd be all over it. He's a proper footballer

Look like I was wrong on this one then! So why is McCarthey homegrown? English family?

“A home grown player is defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Welsh Football Association for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).”

How can he be home grown? He joined Wigan from Hamilton in July 2009 and was born in Nov 1990.

This is what I thought, I knew he moved when he was 18/19 but heard he still wasn't HG, so looks like he missed out by around 7 months.

So he was trained in England for the whole of 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12, turning 21 during the latter season. So, HG by both PL and CL rules.

His home grown status has already been covered several pages ago - an Irishman, trained in a Scottish club but spending just enough time in Wigan to satisfy the locally trained criteria for UEFA and the HG criteria for the PL.

so a lot of people on here wasn't struck on delph coming to city for 8 million to be a bench warmer just because he was homegrown and now we are talking about someone who imo aint nowhere near as good as delph for over double the money, getting silly season in here now

It's you're opinion that Delph is better than McCarthy.

It's other's opinion that McCarthy is better than Delph.

Hardly silly season.

Because he trained at a British club...

It's not British.

UEFA defines locally-trained or 'homegrown' players as those who, regardless of their nationality, have been trained by their club or by another club in the same national association for at least three years between the age of 15 and 21. Up to half of the locally-trained players must be from the club itself, with the others being either from the club itself or from other clubs in the same association.

It's any nationality of player, trained in England under the FA.

Ah yes of course, he was still to turn 19 when he signed, silly me haha

A really top drawer player, a few injuries issues with his hamstrings though.

Technically, very sound and might even be able to improve.

I'd never realised he was Home Grown; I checked last season and he wasn't registered as so by Everton. That's the only reason I'd assumed we'd looked past him when pursuing midfield options such as Delph.

Tell your contacts to get hold of him and Stones; both would represent fantastic investments and perfectly supplement the signings of Sterling and Pogba.

Would also go a long way to making the deluded scouse footballing community realise that Manchester is the northern footballing superpower.

20 doesn't seem to far off for me for a HG player. Delph's actual value is probably 15 of so if Villa put him up for sale. I would expect McCarthy to be a bit more.

I'd be delighted if we got him for £20 million.

That's not a high price at all in today's market.

Excellent post A, Stones is definitely for the future, Signing him with McCarthy would be golden!
