So who's to blame for last seasons relatively poor defence? Our much maligned LBs? Yaya's penchant to getting forward without offering enough defensive input?
Fernando's post-Stoke form? MP(or the Master Planner's) gung-ho tactics? If you mention any of these points I guess I'd have to agree with you. The only area where I seem to differ with most posters on here is that I still won't exonerate the CBs as they have not been convincing all season. We make reference to the final 6 games last season where we were a lot better but we all know how it felt squandering two-goal leads against Swansea and Villa. The point I'm making is that our defence is not finished article yet. Add the fact that rival teams have the opportunity to improve their squads now, then you'd understand that the issue of how much we're spending should only be a secondary consideration. The only 'problem' I see with this potential transfer is what the media and rival fans would say but I'll tell you what, I couldn't care less about that. I know CB is one position that relies heavily on other units of the team and many-a-times CBs get skinned by opposition attackers because they were left exposed but we have also seen CBs bailing their teams when everyone else were not doing their jobs. An example of this, off the top of my head, is Koscielny for Arsenal. There were times when it seemed everyone else was sleeping, central midfielders, Monreal, Matersaker, etc but his presence at the back was more or less their lifeline and oh, how they missed him when he was out injured. Denayer should be eased into the starting 11 with time. Yes we all hope our captain fantastic is back to his best, others have been good but not great so this is an area we need to strenghten and my prefered way to getting this done is sending Mangala the other way, on loan so we can have him back when Demi is gone.

No way do you pay a reported £40m on a player and them send him out on loan. Mangala took time to settle and was becoming increasingly confident towards the back end of last season. I believe he will be the foundation for this season.

If anyone is going on loan, IMO it would be Denayer

I doubt denayer goes on loan, it seems he was promised a crack at the first team. He's probably 3rd choice CB right now

That's a fair proposition and I'm open to options regarding who goes out on loan but what is sacrosacnt for me is getting our first choice CD who luckily is available (next season it might not be so). If you recall last season we wanted Pepe but it didn't work out (I think that was January of 2013/14 season iirc), then in summer of 2014/15 our first choice was Roma's Benatia. It was when we realized he wasn't going to come that we opted for Mangala because of his previous two seasons perfomance which was a huge risk. I'm a firm believer that Manga will come good and surprise his critics but I made that suggestion if that's what it'll take to smoothen the deal.

This isnt true, Benatia wanted to come but the board wanted Mangala over him. Benatia nothing more than a plan B. Been poor at bayern too

Jesus. No one's going anywhere, we have our four centre backs for the season. If we do buy a big name centre half in all probability it will be demichelis who takes a back seat.
One or two injuries at the back and we will benefit from having a fifth top centre half as we don't ever want to get into a Garcia at centre half situation again do we

I really hope we sign Otamendi. Superb centre-back and he gets a good number of goals too. Mangala will come good I'm sure, but I don't want to rely on him week in week out.

£40m?

I get limited info an odd time from top source. Was told and have sent to people back in mid June. Roberts was 100% done.. Sterling and pogba was only and is only us in for. Juve want to sell we want to buy doesn't mean it will. De bruyne at that point was more difficult because more than us wanted him and contact knew less of this deal. Kompany pissed off many at the club with his behaviour and is having to try and make the peace. Need alternates in case. That's it. I have pm a couple of people with previous info from source. Don't get too involved because to many dicks on here (he's in the USA). Don't personally know THD or Zin but know some that do. They try and help get knobs getting all anal over a forum
If any one would like to know anything else always in the MCR and not hard to miss. Mcfc pride of manchester

Otamendi case: Crucial 48 hours ahead:

"Valencia CF are waiting for Otamendi to come tomorrow and Nuno Espirito Santo will have a deep talk with him to try to make him change his mind" (25/07/2015 - 09:19)

So, it looks like maybe Otamendi is not a priority (till the KDK case is resolved), and he and his agent is giving up and have to face the possibility of staying in the city of the oranges (Valencia) the next season...

CB would be near the bottom of the list of priorities for me. Kompany will undoubtedly be improved. Mangala should improve. You know what you're getting with Demi. Denayer deserves a chance. We've gone all-in for Pogba and if any other transfer could hinder that at all it's obviously not worth it.

I disagree. Kompany was injured on a number of accasions last season. Demichelis is slower than me and not getting any younger. Denayer is just a kid and totally unproven at the level we're playing at. Mangala looks promising but is still young and adjusting. I hope we're not going into next season with our fingers crossed that they will all be ok. This is a professional outfit with designs on the title and Champs League. We need a solid, dependable and experienced centre back and this lad fits the bill perfectly. Fans tend to focus on attacking players who look good on Youtube, but the club needs to ensure that we have a solid foundation, and not hope that we have one. A centre back and a left back are high priorities.

I agree. A left back and a centre back are needed. Kompany and Mango were suspect last season. Demichelis is decent but woefully slow and Denayer is totally unproven at this level. I'd get Kolarov and I'm sorry to say Demichelis shipped out to make way for 2 new signings.

The last point is often ignored by many who talk about last season's signings. Benatia was dogshit v City & looks like a bullet dodged. Imo this bloke is very similar & the dreadful corner Real scored v our two rookie cbs is almost identical to the one they scored v Otamendi.

Spain & the Premier League are a totally different matter & Mangala has talked at length about the culture shock of playing here. Signing a 5ft 10 cb wjth no pace and a liking for diving into tackles, is absolutely not a guarantee of improving the defence. It is a complete gamble.

Pretty much just described Demichelis tbh, who was awful at first while attempting to play that la liga style of defending. No way in the world would Otamendi hit the ground running in the PL, he may adapt to it like Demi has, but the ridiculous way people defend in Spain doesn't work at all over here (or over there tbh, hence the huge scorelines every week)
