Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

I enjoyed those highlights, cheers. Its clear he has a natural talent, his technical ability is superb.....but having watched that clip, its also obvious why he is on loan,he needs to learn the game, make the right decisions and keep it as simple as it needs to be.Hopefully, what looked like a very good debut can earn him the promotion to their next first team game, ill certsinly be looking out for it.

Doing that in a celtic reserve match is a bit different in a key top of the table game, cup final or CL game where ,whatever we think, if he made a mistake on the night the fall out might damage him before he has properly started. We are handling him well I l think. Do people really believe that MP or any other City manager makes these decisions in isolation Txixi and others will be driving the decisions as DOF the manager will coach who is here . Pep will also have discussions with Txixi and co about it all too in the build up to him taking over I would imagine.
Thanks for posting that, I thought I'd missed a Celtic match coming up. A reserve match... jeez.

He won't though, he's on an 18 month loan with more than likely no recall clause. With De Bruyne and Navas now injured its not looking like such a great deal.
You like everybody else on here have no idea what the terms of the contract is in regards to a recall option. Regardless of that, De Bruyne & Navas being injured doesn't all of a sudden make Roberts ready for our first team. As stated by others we've kept Barker so perhaps the coaching staff have seen more from him in training and would rather trust Barker at the moment. I suspect we're going to find out one way or another shortly given the fixture congestion coming up.

Decision making is a massive part of the game for a player like Roberts. It's exactly the same for Barker as both like to take on the defenders but you can't just do that all the time. I was encouraged from that clip by the decsions Roberts was taking as I don't think we saw him lose the ball even once and he regularly jinked around a player or two befoe releasing the ball to someone in space and space that he had helped create.

The opposition will know you have to at least double mark him as he can tear a defence apart if left one on one. He is a wonderful talent. The one thing I thought was missing from that clip was a smile! He just didn't seem to be enjoying himself. That's his character I guess not to show too much or maybe he just can't undrestand a word that anyone speaks up there just yet.

I very much doubt though that Celtic would have agreed to developing one of our players if they didn't get to keep him for the length of the deal (however there could be a financial arrangement for an early recall I admit). In regards to Barker, I think Roberts looks that level ahead at the moment. They could both become very good though, both could have started in this FA Cup game if he really does play youth, thats the frustrating bit.

It's been that long since I've seen Barker I couldn't say myself sadly, as regards the loan then, yeah, without a doubt given financial incentive to Celtic we could get him back but it would screw them up and I suspect we wouldn't want to spoil what seems like a very good arrangement for both sides. (Celtic fans thoughts aside)

Good loan deal for the lad, but he needs to play for their first team, which I've no doubt he will. Will he get a Champions medal if (!) they win the league?

I think they need to make at least 10 appearances to qualify. Also the club only get a certain number of medals although from memory they can pay for more.

I'd have thought the Celtic comments were expected really, he has struggled with injury this season and he still needs to bulk/toughen up to make it with us. He also needs more consistency, YouTube highlights never ever show the full story. There's only 3 months of the run in left and he will have to adapt and improve even for the SPL, which makes a mockery of the people who think he should be playing in our 1st team right now.

So have we loaned this lad just to play in their development squad? Strange one.

Yep very Strange unless it's a character building exercise and see how he reacts

They are treating him like a player they'll have for 18 months. He was only just recovering from injury when he went to them, so his fitness will be low after not playing for 3 months.

Then there's things Celtic can afford to do because of the length of the loan - like get him used to the squad before chucking him in and hoping for the best.

Lets show a bit of patience, take into consideration he is managed properly and professionally, and give it a few weeks before we send up a lynch mob.

Agree in sentiment but why have we bought a lad who was playing regularly at Championship level only to stick him in our EDS squad and them farm out to Celtic.

The Championship is at a higher level than the shite in Scotland.

He wasn't playing regularly at Championship level.

Six months to learn their style of play before he gets the chance to be a first team regular. Words fail me.
