Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

Roberts is a serious quality player. We got him and i think plenty of others wanted him.The word I got from inside is that he is very highly rated by management and players alike (first teamers who trained with him) His initila games for the EDS were very promising and especially against Juve who he tore apart.

From there he had one or two injuries made the bench for the 1st team without getting on much and making limited impact when he has got on. Recent performances for the EDS have actually been quite poor and it seemed he was trying to do too much to prove himself ( show off?) and just getting most things wrong.

I am not sure a loan spell is what he needs although if someone could guarantee he palyed every week.... I would just like to see him play a few EDS games and get some confidence back so that he fully deserves some more bench and sub appearance time. As I said he is quality and we have to get that out of him

From what I've seen of him, he doesn't need a loan, he needs to play every week in the EDS and start playing as more of a team player and not try and do it all himself.

If he goes on loan and has the same attitude on the pitch, trying to do far too much on his own, the manager will simply not play him and he'll be stuck training with the reserves of some league 1 team.

hes barely had any minutes at all to make any impact. he's literally played about 1 half of first team football the entire time he's been here. he is too good for the eds team and is stagnating when what he needs is first team competitive football.

not suggesting you have but i notice once a player isn't playing well or getting any minutes, the excuse seems to be they have an attitude problem. I've heard from posters on here about, barker, lopes, roberts, denayer ..... i wouldn't be suprised if he was annoyed he isn't developing and under pelle doesn't have a chance. needs to go on loan or leave for his career.

This is the classic problem you face with top level youth prospects. Too good for the EDS but not good enough for the first team.
I think the answer is he needs to play regularly for the EDS and get some match fitness and form and be coached into playing a very specific role that he could translate to the first team. I wouldn’t mind seeing him having a go on the right wing. He needs to understand that he will get some opportunities off the bench and when he does he has to put in a performance on a par with Navas or KDB in the same position. That might sound a bit far fetched but that is the reality of our level. If he comes on for the last 20 mins of a home game he would need to rip in to the opposition and create opportunities as that is the only way he is going to muscle his way in. Navas is the only out and out right sided attacker we have and there is an opportunity there, he just needs to make that big step.

If he can be as good as Navas like work rate and covering but have more of a end product he'd get plenty of game time.

Heard on a Sunderland thread that he could be heading there on loan, so had a peek at their thread, it's hilarious. Can just imagine if someone posted something similar on here that the op did. F@ck me!

Think it's the third page when Pat gets mentioned but think it's bs, just can't see that being a good move for the lad. Play under Big Sam, good god!!!

Birmingham have just sold Gray so can accommodate another forward players; would be ideal environment for either Barker or Roberts to the end of the season.

Agreed. Much better than Sunderland.
