Just a guess mate and agree it could be a wrong, but I think Everton have given us their valuation (around 50mil if you believe reports) and we trying to bring that price down. Everton seem to have agreed to let him leave on condition that their valuation is met. So in my view, we either pay that valuation now, pay it on Sept 1st or move onto another target. Everton have already shown they were not willing to let this lad go for 40mil last season and playing the lad tonight they are just trying to put pressure on the deal, showing us that they willing to have him part of the team for the coming season, if we not willing to meet their demands. For them its business as usual. As there has been no "leaks" to say we "didnt want him anyway" or "didnt feel he was worth the price" (like with Laporte deal) I would say we still interested, and still considering whether we should meet that valuation...As the ball is in our court, I see it as "us" that are holding up the deal...No real need for Everton to drop there demands, with new money and new owners. Would they keep an unhappy player, who knows? I just believe we dragging our feet on whether we should pay that asking price.

Might be completely wrong mate and dont mind if I am....just helps to type out the frustration!!;)

I would agree tho that Big transfers like this are never easy and sometimes the reality is very different to what many of us think!

this one will drag. can see it being done last week of august

You might be right but I would expect things to pick up when we return from China. Stones is no longer on holiday and it's not in the interest of either club for this to drag on any more than it has. If Everton can sign a replacement that might nudge things along a bit too.

Would handing in a transfer request accomplish anything productive in this situation? Like a few have mentioned I suspect this is going to the end of August.

Maybe but I could see our staff holding the deal until after the team returns from china. That seems to be the only obstacle being that it is up to us paying in any of our transfer negotiations. I think that would also open the door for a mass unveiling with Sane and the other kids, which plays into our whole rebranding process. I think Stones training/playing with Everton for now is ok since he can warm up for the season and fit when he joins us

He never retracted the one he handed in last summer. And he's told Everton he wants to come here. He's done everything on his end it's us negotiating that is the hold up.

Interesting. I would have thought it reset after they declined chelsea. Appreciate the update. The only sensible thing for everton to do is hold out until the very end. How much is a month with Pep worth to the brass and how much will everton budge? I love this type of stuff. Very intrigued to see what this one ends up at considering all the great business Txiki has done this window.

Your last few words sum it all up, yet you and others still feel the need to post regularly that it is us who are holding things up without a scooby as to what is actually happening

In that briefing the club gave the press today, journalists were told that a deal was "still some way off" so I guess it's not a surprise that he's playing tonight. Probably a bit of posturing going on from both clubs as they haggle over the fee.

Like you said Ric Everton are in a fantastic position with this one and they have there price that they won't budge from.

Yeah, our need to get the player is greater than their need to sell, so they're in a strong position. I guess Begiristain has to at least try and negotiate a better price for us though.

Stones made a big mistake signing such a long contract with Everton at such a young age. He could be trapped there for another 3 years! Well 2 as I'm sure Everton would attempt to cash in rather than he leave for nothing.

I'm not sure that's true though. John Stones may turn out to be a very good footballer in the next 3-4 years. He is by no means the finished article yet and will not be the difference between success and failure, this season at least. Meanwhile, do Everton buy a replacement or not and do they risk having an unhappy player all season? They didn't sell him last season and he didn't play much and, however good a season he might have for them this year, he will never be worth more than now. I think we should make one take it or leave it bid. If they accept it all well and good. If not, move on.

Maybe the hold up is between Everton and Barnsley ? Over how their % will be paid
