I have said several times now. Laporte is a defender who lacks defensive abilities(tackling, physicality and blocking), but excels in so many other aspects that people think he is one of the best defenders in the world (he is till really good, just not elite).

Laportes vs Stones is like Cancelo vs Wlaker at RB for me. One is better against not elite competition (Cancelo & Laporte), and the other better against elite (Walker & Stones).

1st goal: He made an Ake, attack Salah, but hesitate. So he didn't tackle and he was out of the play at the same time.
2nd goal: everyone saw that one.

His passing this season has been phenomenal. Some of his passes through the lines are gorgeous and it makes a massive difference to our build-up play

I don't think he was as bad for the Salah goal as everyone thinks. Ultimately once you're left defending Salah in that position, you generally want to stop him coming inside onto his left foot and shooting, which Laporte did. Make him go outside and use his right foot, which to his credit Salah did brilliantly

Laporte was too tentative and passive for both of their goals today. Needs to be more aggressive and assured in what he does.

But he was good overall. I just think the Dias-Stones partnership is better.

yeah, it’s time for Stones to be reinstated now to resume the best defensive partnership in Europe.

Not the same player since the injury he had in my opinion

Nor the same player without Fernandinho in front of him; I think his reputation was largely forged while being protected from danger on the counter. He’s a great footballer but not a great defender IMO, and certainly seems to lack the defensive IQ Stones and Dias have.

I’d like to see him utilised in front of defence as a Rodri alternative; he did it earlier in his career at Bilbao, and it’d allow him to showcase all of his positive attributes with a safety net behind him.

Overly critical to criticise him for the second goal. it's just a phenomenal bit of forward play, he got done simple as that happens to every defender at some point, it's impossible to be perfect. His passing brings another dimension to our game, he's the best by far in that department and means we don't have to rely on Rodri to get the ball into our forward players in good positions. He generally covers cancelo a lot better than Dias does because of his natural left foot. No issues here, part of a defence that's conceded 3 times in 7 games. Nothing to warrant being dropped, Stones will have to bide his time, he will get his chance after the internationals when the schedule intensifies.

He got done by Messi and Salah in the last couple of games that cost us goals , but he will only come up against players of that calibre a handful of times in a season, and those two players will do the same to many, many other defenders.
He is having a good season , and looks solid alongside Dias , its just the really big games against world class players that he has looked vulnerable.

Salah is a world class player. Top notch. That goal was just brilliant and whilst he made Laporte look foolish, I’m not convinced anyone would have done any better in that position.

Hope these minutes have kept him happy, for the most part he's been decent. He was a bit too tentative at times today but wasn't poor by any stretch.
Would like to see Stones start next game though.

Yeah, some of his one-time passing straight as he wins possession in a crowded area is a wonderful sight.

Stones is just as good if not better footballer than Eric and City are fortunate to have them both.

does make mistakes, but you do also have to give kudos to the attacker sometimes. He's also in a position where Dias has already got booked for nothing, Milner hasn't been sent off and the Salah pen from last season and it's not an excuse, but perhaps it's in the defender's head that they can't touch them, I think year after year in games like this we've just been conditioned that we'll get screwed so we have to stop them without touching them. He still made an error, but for me Cancelo's silly "dangle his foot back" attempt was more egregious. Laporte got done but I'm not going to bash him for it, he's been really solid with Dias since they paired up.

John is also great, so it's good if we have 3 in form options and Ake trying his best as a 4th.

yeah, it's being a tad overcritical about instances in games v some of the best forwards in the world, however, i do wonder if we would have conceded the Salah and Messi goals with Dias on the left

This is the conundrum for Pep no slight against Laporte but we get the very, very best out of Ruben when he's alongside John in his best position. My guess is Messi would still have scored but Dias would have blocked Salah. Either way all three are top drawer.

Great to hear that Laporte is happy again. Would've been a huge loss if he left in the summer.
That makes good reading. However you can’t help thinking how things could flip if Stones gets a run instead. He’s been patient so far.

It’s difficult to see how we can keep both happy. Brilliant if we can though.
