But he's a great centre-back and we need to hang onto him. He will get more than enough starting places in a 60 plus game season. Stones and Dias will get injuries and we will sometimes play three centre backs. Ake is light years behind Laporte in ability.

I’m not disagreeing with any of that, I just don’t think he should be playing leftback

2 years ago before he got injured he was widely regarded as the second best defender in the league, Ben whites just gone for £50 million, varane £40million with a year left on his contract, Sevilla reportedly want over £70 million for Kounde. £60million is at least £20 million short and even that's letting him go cheap.

Certain clubs might not have cash but it hasn't actually had any major impact on the transfer market in terms of valuations, I don't see why we should be the only club to let that happen.

We bought him for about that price, his stock has done nothing but rise since and the market is significantly inflated since then. There's no reason not to be making a healthy profit on him if he is to leave.

Sounds like he's a bit of a wrong 'un. Still, very disappointing news all the same. We had 3 absolutely top drawer centre halves. Now we're looking at regular appearances from Nathan Ake if only to afford Stones and Dias some rest, never mind the doomsday scenario of one of them getting injured

Laporte is easily better than Stones in all aspects.

A few years ago yes. They seem to have swapped roles now. These days I see Stones as the confident, physically dominant leader and Laporte as slightly lost squad player who makes mistakes under pressure.

I'd like to hear Laporte's reasons for leaving straight from the horse's mouth. If it really is just "I want to start every game and didn't like being deservedly benched last season" then I'm happy to let him go, but I'd prefer to believe there's more to it than that.

To be honest, I never understood what people saw in him. He's a standard defender who never does anything that makes me think he's special.
Injured himself by tackling with the wrong foot. Schoolboy challenge.
Looks like a loner, never formed a bond with any of our other defenders on the pitch.
I lost any real interest in him when he moaned about not being picked for France and switched nationality.
We'll be lucky to get £40m for him imo. He's never really proved himself at top level.

This could be closer to the truth than it looks at first. He's solid, nothing more than that. Our selling of players is truly awful. If we do shift him £50m would be my guess.

this all day long and how could anyone not want to stay in Manchester when we have glorious weather like today. Seems an oddball to me. Get rid.

One trick pony.
The big left long ball to the right wing.
Anything else from him goes backwards

A lot of history revisitation going on here, I fancy. He didn't make the PFA Team of the Year in 2019, cos he was crap. He made it cos he was the 2nd best centre half in the league after Van Dyke that season. He might have one or two shortcomings, but he's a quality centre half nonetheless and Nathan Ake will constitute a sizeable downgrade

Laporte isn't quick enough to play left back and doesn't have the engine to get up and down the flank all game. Left side of a back three, sure. But not fullback
You mention speed but he’d blitz Zinchenko in a race. Engine wise the idea of him playing there would be he doesn’t go forward much. Currently our left backs offer nothing going forward but I suppose Zinchenko does slot into midfield well. I think Laporte could do a job there but quite frankly given what we’ve spent and how long the manager has now been here it’s a bit of a joke we still don’t have a proper decent left back.

Just hope we keep Laporte so we’ve got 3 top centre backs for a near 60 game season. Frankly if we lose him I think the drop down to Ake is huge and could cost us.

That’s bollocks his passing out from the back is absolutely top class
Really?
I usually see him look up then turn sidewards to play it back safely.
Otherwise he dithers and gets closed down pretty quickly.
Not as GREAT as some people want to see

Now people slag him off lol, very dipper like if i may say , he clearly wants to be away so he gets in the world cup team, he is very talented and wants to play , if it is in spain in the sun then why not , dont be dippers ffs
People have very short memories and incredible lack of respect for a player who has served this club well and helped win multiple titles.

Lack of respect?
He's served us and done a job as any paid professional should.
But you talk as if he's a god and we should do all in our power to keep him as we would crumble without him.
I beg to differ and think he's the 3rd best CB at the club, thus making him very good cover, a valuable squad member like numerous others.
If he can't play all the time and he wants to go then i for one have no problem with that, in fact i RESPECT that

Football and fortunes change quickly as we have seen with the return to form of John Stones and the emergence of Dias, but can change for the worse just as quickly.

IF we lose Laporte, and either Dias or Stones have any sort of issues, the drop off in ability to Ake in my opinion is huge and could be the difference to retaining the title.
