Made no effort at all to track Kane for their second goal, not even half-arsed - just nothing. Weird performance.

Poor game but nowhere near as bad as Dias and Walker. Not by a long shot.
I find the immense criticism of Laporte so funny.
Laporte has been a mainstay in what before today's game was statically the best defense in European football.. but all of a sudden he's the reason we've lost and are only 6 points clear at the top of the league. Give me a break. The last game Stones/Dias played together we were conceding chances for fun. Leipzig should have beaten us 4 or 5-1 that day.

He was poor but so were the rest of the back four + Kane and Son were very very good.

Can you really use that game as an example? Nobody gave a shit. I actually got the impression some of them were wondering why they weren't being rested and youngsters given a chance.
Not singling out Laporte but I can't imagine Kane being allowed to ghost into the box like he did twice yesterday if Stones was on the pitch.

I think that for both us and England, Stones often does a great job against top strikers. Seen him practically nullify Lukaku, Ronaldo, Lewandowski, just in the past few months.
Stones is as imperfect as anyone and I'm not saying we definitely would have won if he'd started. But I think he's the best we've got at sticking to the task of frustrating a striker and marking him out of a game. And he's our only CB with experience of playing with Kane, so probably knows him best and that might have been important.
I like all our CBs individually but think Dias/Laporte is a shaky combination. Both generally very good (although had a poor game yesterday) but something is off in how they work together.

A good example of a player who never had any problems with Kane was Otamendi. We never conceded to a Kane goal with Otamendi on the pitch except for a penalty, because Nico would concentrate on marking him and had the jumping skills to match. Agreed that Stones could have done the same job.

Watch it again, Kane came from deep and went straight past Cancelo.Made no effort at all to track Kane for their second goal, not even half-arsed - just nothing. Weird performance.
This Laporte bashing is getting fucking ridiculous, it sounds like everyone's got spoilt.

The problem is not just Laporte’s, it is a systemic problem with the way we defend against the counter and especially crosses.
We try to play narrow to force the ball wide. This often slows things down and allows us time to filter back. The problem is that if the attack is not slowed down, either by a tactical foul or forcing a player to slow down, then we are one on one at the back.
Our midfield is sometimes slow to get back into anything resembling a defensive shell on the counter, because we attack in such numbers.
For Kane’s first goal, he was smart enough (yeah, he’s not a bad player!) to pick his slot behind Laporte and ahead of the lacking Cancelo.
For his second, their third, he did the same thing on the far post again, this time on our right side. He took up his position BEHIND the center back, knowing our full backs are not real defenders who are going to get up for the ball, or challenge him!
Walker, who has never seen a high ball he cant foul the attacker for, doesn’t even TRY to use those massively strong legs to get up and challenge for the ball in the air! Instead, AS ALWAYS, he tries to “undercut” the attacker and knock them off the ball. Kane, who has seen this repeatedly at Spurs and then at England, simply doesn’t allow it, focuses on the ball, and gets his head on it!
The defending is pathetic, but it’s NOT the CBS, but the FBs, who were at fault for both. In both instances, the CB was in front of the attacker in an effort to stop the ball coming across, but in neither instance did the CB get the assistance they need (the eyes in the back of their head) from the FB behind them.
Shockingly consistent problem that we have gotten away with numerous times. In this game, a world class striker on his game played them perfectly and dominated the statistically best defence in the league!
Our Achilles Heel is KNOWN to be the counter attack, and especially Son on the counter!! In this game, Dias played right into it with his late offside ploy and us playing offside on the half way line. That’s great against the old, slow forwards of some teams, but against the explosive pace of Son, Moura, and this new lad from Sweden???
It is debatable which CB pairing would have done better against the break, but Dias definitely picked a bad day to have perhaps his worst game in the shirt.
Lastly, why was Emerson Royal open down our left, their right, on every single counter attack. That’s a full back with the freedom of the park in every cross field pass. Whose fault is that?

That's probably true coz John Stones hasn't been allowed to play enough. Even playing RB, he is so much better than Diaz or Laporte passing out of the back. I think the incidental bad playson defense will happen to all our defenders. But we have to use the ball better in possession. And Stones is light years better than any of the others.

I wouldn't say he's lightyears ahead of laporte in possession, nobody in our back line plays the sweeping cross field diagonal which gets us a lot of joy better than Laporte but it's true for Dias. I'm not saying Stones doesn't deserve the nod but why is it automatically for laporte who has been better than Dias (who hasn't exactly been bad himself.) Additionally, a stones plus laporte partnership still gives the right and left footed balance Pep values so highly.That's probably true coz John Stones hasn't been allowed to play enough. It makes a welcome change to have a positive selection dilemma at the minute it's currently our most competitive position, all 4 are playing well when given a chance.

I very much doubt you can back your personal impression that Stones is much better than Dias and Laporte at passing the ball with facts and stats. There were stats from last season which showed he isn't better, let alone light years better. No need to exaggerate.
