Seems to be the norm nowadays….a few decent stops, some great kicks/passes followed by numerous fuck upsAgain some average goalkeeping performance from him.
Watch it again. He was exactly where he should be when the ball was played, which is around the edge of his box.He wasn't where he should be on this occasion no chance, he was absolutely nowhere near Mbappe the ball or the net. He wasn't around the edge of his box either he was near the penalty spot, he put himself in the worst position possible for that situation. The only way he could have been positioned worse is if he was stood near the corner flag, it was horrendous goalkeeping.
There is absolutely no defending the position he took up.

Here’s the defence - what did the left mid do to stop the long ball ? - nothingHe wasn't where he should be on this occasion no chance, he was absolutely nowhere near Mbappe the ball or the net. Yes, as soon as the ball was played, he should have been backtracking. It’s fine wanting to play high when making yourself available as a deep outfield player, but you have to be alert enough to be able to get into the proper position for the situation.Watch it again. The time between the ball being played, Dias' total fuck up and mbappe getting it, he's backed up all that he can from his starting position and ended up where he was, he can't go anywhere else. So where exactly do you think he should be? Are you expecting him to backup to his line in an instant via teleportation or are you suggesting he shouldnt be on the edge of his box as instructed to be for the past 7 years or whatever it is he's been here?
Here's the best screenshot I could get, he's already backtracking at this point from his starting position View attachment 147385
That's exactly what he does? He has a brief moment where he sets himself when Dias does whatever the hell he did, other than that he's backtracking all the time, he simply cannot do anything else, there's no fault whatsoever on him.Yes, as soon as the ball was played, he should have been backtracking. And, would he be any less available to the defenders if he was 5 yards further back?
It was poor all round but the chance would have been a lot harder for Mbappe had he not stood where he did, he made it easy for him. Here’s the defence - what did the left mid do to stop the long ball ? - nothing
What did tow centre backs do to stop / deal with Mbappe ? - nothing
But hey ho let’s blame Eddie
I don't need to watch it again, he made it easy for Mbappe. The pros themselves said it, it's also not about being where he usually should be or teleportation as you put it, it's about reading the game & adjusting to scenarios, as soon as that ball was sent forward everybody knew it was dropping in behind Dias & everybody knew Ederson was getting lobbed.Watch it again. Based on this picture, it made sense he backed off. The bsll looked 65/35 as advantage Mbappe from that view. And the fact that both Stones and Diaa were trying (albeit unsuccessfully) to track him made it a good decision to back pedalWatch it again. He shouldn't have come in the first place, if he had a chance of making a challenge for the ball or beating the attacker to it then yes it would have been the correct decision to come, once he realised he made the wrong decision it was too late to back off.Based on this picture, it made sense he backed off. But i think he was high up normally anyway. Sunce we hold a high line, our keeper generally doesn't sit on his line or in the 6 box. He is normally just outside or slightly inside his 18.He shouldn't have come in the first place, if he had a chance of making a challenge for the ball or beating the attacker to it then yes it would have been the correct decision to come, once he realised he made the wrong decision it was too late to back off.
Sadly, we do this every year. Most of our good players tend to stay 1 or 2 years past their decline.I hope this is the last time in the Pep era when a player mentally checks out and wants a move away we just allow it, and reinvest the transfer fee and lose of huge wages back into the squad.
We held onto Kyle 12-18 months too long, and now we sure looked like we did the same with Eddie and who knows if Saudi will bail us out this summer with another 25M+ offer.
I was never in the Ortega No. 1 camp this past summer, but if we would have just let Eddie leave when he wanted we could have certainly brought in a young top notch keeper with his wages off the books as well as 25M+ fee
No, dias made it easy for Mbappe not Ederson. He read the game, he was in his customary position prepared to sweep, the ball came in, hes instantly backtracked knowing it isn't a ball to come for, dias makes a mess of it and leaves ederson up shit creek. What is Ederson supposed to do differently?I don't need to watch it again, he made it easy for Mbappe. Forget Dias for a second, mistake or not do you honestly believe Ederson should be stood in that position with Mbappe chasing those kind of balls? You do not stand that far off your line with a bouncing over the top ball it's, basic goalkeeping!
It’s got to be tough, because Pep needs to trust his players…and he’s got almost a decade of trust built up with Eddie and Kyle and him were obviously very close.Sadly, we do this every year. Most of our good players tend to stay 1 or 2 years past their decline.
