47 | Phil Foden - 2023/24

Its clear as day why Phil struggles in the England set up. When he came on as sub vs Ukraine he was in his favoured central position but when he plays it with city, he plays with players that aren't frightened to pass the ball to him in tight spaces. They know they can trust him. We also have wingers that can invert and find him in the pockets of space he loves. He has Rodri/Kova/Bernie round him. In that environment he can excel.

Contrast that with England where he is in acres of space with nobody (other than Jack and John if they play) that understands how to get the best out of him. Waistcoat looks set to play Rice and Bellingham in every game from now and Phil will not flourish with those two players unless they are coached to use him (coached by waistcoat? what a joke). Play him alongside Madison supported by Jack wide and John as a cb/dm and we may start to see him shine but that is way past Southgate's risk threshold.
 
Oy, Southgate you clueless twat, the media don't have to ask Pep they can ask me. The answer is, he isn't better than KDB in that position but at the moment with KDB being injured guess who is playing in that position? Maguire doesn't play centre back for his club, actually he doesn't play anywhere, so why does he play. Maddison doesn't play left wing for Spurs but he did for England. What a fucking muppet we have as a manager, it's similar to Martinez at Belgium and look what he did with them.

Yep, we've got the world's most expensive defensive midfielder, but apparently he can't handle the job himself against the mighty Ukraine, even though we've got Walker (primarily defensive nowadays) as our right full back. Fair enough, if you're gonna play Alexander-Arnold and have him spend most of the game in the opposition half, you might want someone to cover him. But you've basically got a defensive unit of 6 when you have some of the most exciting attacking talent in the world on the bench. And then goes and plays Maddison on the fucking wing, which is not his position either. It's like the years of Paul Scholes and Emile Heskey the left wingers all over again.
 
Would love Phil to retire from international football- it's shit anyway.

What Southgate has done is a massive management no, no. You've basically got a journo questioning his competence with selection and using the squad he has at his disposal to its best capabilities- and what Southgate has done, he's turned it into Phil's (/Peps) problem, the absolute coward.

I wonder if Foden is fuming, I would be going ballistic.

I've said something similar in the past, and have begun to wonder if Phil needs to be more direct with England.

As you say, he doesn't get a lot of passes in tight spaces, but he also receives the ball, and will often pass it straight back. With City that's usually the key for a slight movement from the defender, so the ball can be played back to Foden in a better position. The constant probing for weaknesses, and trying to unbalance the opposition is ingrained into his play. With England, he passes back, makes his move, but the player he's passed to has already meandered off somewhere else.

The rest of the team aren't going to play like City, so Foden arguably needs to be more greedy - recognise that when he is given the ball he takes chances that Pep wouldn't want. There was an article just yesterday from Jonathan Wilson, suggesting Messi did well in the World Cup because international teams don't have time to work on systems, so individual brilliance still works.

Foden is probably England's most gifted individual player, and I'd love to see him show that for England.

Your last sentence is so relevant but will never happen in an England team " managed " by the totally inept Southgate.

If he did as you suggest, Southgate would not play him again, opting to play another crab-like alternative.

An FA yes man who is misusing and wasting English talent every year that he is in post.

What an absolutely crazy admission of complete inadequacy to be outsourcing your decisions to another manager. Imagine if I went into my work and was like “oh yeah, I’m not making that report because Dave from accounts thinks it’s better to do it at the end of the month.”

Pep is the greatest manager of our generation but he’s not a fucking god emperor that insists the England manager should acquiesce immediately to his way of thinking - subservient bollocks. More like Gareth Cuckgate.

It’s cowardice under pressure ofvrelevant questions. It’s clear to anyone with any understanding of football what a generational talent Phil is. Southgate should be embracing that and building a team round him.
 
Southgate seems to have no issue dragging Foden off early in a game when it is not deserving and talks about his 'lack of ability' to play a position. He displays a clear lack of respect for Foden and he has his favourites who he treats differently.

If I was in Foden's place. I would not play for England while Southgate is manager.

I do hope Pep corrects Southgate and asks him not to make assumptions about what he thinks of City players.

Why are you getting so pissed off. I read it again and you are right he said that Phil has a desire to play centrally. So aggressive with your replies. My point stands that Phil should be given chance to play in the centre for England.

That would be excellent . I am struggling to believe that Pep told the Waistcoat Foden wasn't any good in midfield. If he came out even with a mild statement in the next press conference saying Foden is excellent in midfield. It would be very damaging to the waistcoat. And even his ardent admirers like Bluehammer may have to admit he's an idiot.

I think a lot of this probably comes from when Phil and that cnut from the rags were sent home from the England camp for breaching COVID rules.

Having said that, Southgate is holding that grudge way longer than he needs to. He's made his point, and Phil is clearly not that same young, reckless teenage knobhead that he was starting to turn into hanging round with his scally mate from the Rag's.

If anything, the Waistcoated idiot has laboured his point for far too long, to the detriment of the player and the team. He just needs to let it go, and let Phil do his talking on the pitch.
