I am really surprised that he did not start in Alvarez position today.

Does anyone know the reason? injury or just Pep's idea?

Alvarez chases every ball and defends better than Phil. Plus he's a better finishes.
IMO all round Phil is better but he's not kicked on. Big season ahead.

How has he not kicked on? He’s been vital for quite a few of our premier league trophies. Maybe he could go another level, but his level is already pretty brilliant

Alvarez worked hard but good defending is not all about working hard. He lost the positions too many times when he should hold it and block the line. The goal we lost at the last minute is a fine example.

On the other hand Phil is not an excellent defender as well (Bernardo level). But he is certainly more a midfielder than Alvarez.

I think Alvarez at some points is over eager. At one stage he was supposed to be No 9 and he cleared the ball from the edge of our box exactly to where he should have been

Id love to see him in the centre,but i just think its difficult to fit others in if we do that.
