Manchester City believe they are close to brokering a compromise deal that will see Emmanuel Adebayor leave for Tottenham at last.
City are ready to subsidise the Togo striker’s wages at White Hart Lane for the next two seasons, and will hand him a significant chunk of the £5million fee as a pay-off.
It means the champions will have to write off almost all the £25m they paid Arsenal for Adebayor three years ago.
City agreed to sell him in a cut-price deal after he spent last season on loan at Spurs.
But that move was blocked when Adebayor demanded his share of the fee because he would have to take a cut on the £170,000-a-week wages he earns at the Etihad.
Now City will help Spurs pay his salary and will also hand Adebayor most of the fee.
Boss Roberto Mancini urged the striker not to reject the deal, saying: “I am sorry for Adebayor because he has no chance at City.
“He has absolutely no chance of playing this season here.
"So, for us, it’s important he can find a good solution.”
Meanwhile, City are lining up Jack Rodwell, Everton's £20m-rated England midfielder.

We all know what he's going to be like when he plays against us.
ABU inc GDR said:I really hope were not this stupid but it looks like were considering subsidising Adebayour wages to push thro a move to Spurs. Consider whats happened;
After a year long loan where City pay 5mill Ade wages Spurs want to sign him.
We agree a discounted value of 5mill (not 17mill) for Spurs to agree his wages. Ade rejects Spurs offer, he comes back and we pay 2.5mill wages.
Now it looks like we are paying Ade some of the 5mill transfer fee to get rid.
It looks to me like Spurs and Ade have colluded to rip City off, Spurs saved his wages during pre-season and haven't made a serious attempt to sign another striker, WHY NOT?. If we pay Ade 3mill of the 5mill transfer fee he will have cost us 22.5 mill in the last year to get rid.
As it stands we could have paid another club 5mill to take him off our hands at the start of the transfer window and been 500k better off. Mancini could have been getting his original transfer targets that he identified at the end of last season and City would have had more time to negotiate better deals.

What would he do to make ade not want to take a penny less than his £170'000 a week?Train said:Should have let khaldoon settle this...this is a fucking joke.
