Alcohol, hints, tips, advice etc.

I have absolutely no idea why anybody would give up life's little pleasures. context, the universe is 14.5 billion years old, the Earth 4.5. If by over indulging knocks a few years of your life, so be it, the average life span for a UK male is approx 79 years old, if having a few extra tipples shortens your life by a few years, it is literally fuck all in the scheme of things. Indulge in what ever pleasure you have and don't feel pressured by the Media and people who think they know how to live your life.
Context: you only get one life. Some people can enjoy 'a few extra tipples' but for many people there is a miserable existence being a slave to alcohol. No one on this thread is pressurising anyone, bud.
Thanks for your hints, tips and advice on the subject.

I lost two stone in weight, BMI now 23.5 (not bad at all for a 63 year old,) waist size from 38" to 32", heart rate way down from around 100 bpm to 75-80. No more arrhythmic heart beats and blood pressure back down to normal levels.

No more snoring during the night, so everyone sleeps better. Less lethargy, (still a lazy fucker but no excuses for not doing things that need to be done.) Sleep is really refreshing nowadays and I wake up feeling great.

My liver was scanned and showed signs of damage. Now that I've gone 17 months without a drop, I'd like to have another scan to see how much,(if) it's recovered.

Mood swings have settled too. It was a huge change after 40 years of daily heavy drinking, but I feel calm and settled in this new state of wellbeing.

Hope that helps.
From my experience with drinking and liver function if you only drank lager and stayed off the spirits your liver function should be back to normal in around 6 months .
My doctor told me the issues revolve around drinking spirits

I know what you're saying but conversely, there are a growing number of people achieving the realisation that actually "a few extra tipples" just isn't worth it whether that's because it exacerbates mental or physical health issues, or it causes issues in relationships, or its detracting from quality of life in another way.
Personally I love that this thread exists, I'm even a little bit proud that it exists on a football forum populated primarily by men, and the fact that it's so active suggests that there's a need for it.
I don't think that it's preachy; you won't find me talking about a sober existence on other threads but if the support available here helps one person who has recognised that they want to reasses their relationship with alcohol then its a positive thing.
No one is forced to read this thread, just as no one is forced to read the F1 or Angling thread. But the reality is that this thread regularly appears on the 1st page of Off Topic, as does the What Are You Drinking thread. Bluemoon is a broad church and, is all the better for that.

Do you know how dangerous a post like that is on a thread where people are openly sharing their struggle with addiction?, completely irresponsible and needs removing now. If one person who has managed to walk away from the booze reads that and agrees with you, then you have set them back years in their recovery.

Almost 5 months dry for me and I am already noticing huge differences.
Have gone from 113kg (fat slob with huge beer belly) to 96.3kg, loss of 16.7Kg; I do feel a little proud of myself.
It shows me how shit, alcohol, bad diet and infrequent gym usage is for your health and wallet.
Money saved is substantial, I do notice a difference even with cost of living crisis.
Funny things you notice, but recycling wheelie bin is much lighter every bin day now. :)
Well that and the kids and there is my motivation.

Love hearing the positive stories in this thread, keep on smashing it Blues!
Keep up the good work! Well done brother

The context of this thread isn't purely to add a few extra years onto your life, it's to try and ensure that you actually have a life worth living.

That's probably the last thing a recovering alcoholic needs to hear; someone validating drinking in this way.

I think the simple answer is "when it stops being one of life's little pleasures", and you have to remember that everyone is different. Physically, we all process alcohol in the same way, albeit some more efficiently than others, with different tolerance levels and recovery rates. But mentally we are far from the same. Some people can take it or leave it, others need it as a social crutch, and once it becomes habit forming it is all to easy to tip over into physical dependence. That's where the real damage occurs.

I once did a short stint with Surrey Ambulance Service, and in that short time we had to deal with a number of alcohol related incidents, mainly young (30-40 year old) street drinkers who were absolutely wrecked by midday most days. They probably once thought alcohol was one of life's little pleasures, I doubt one of them is alive today.
