Americana / alt.country thread

Before her eclectic solo career, Maria McKee and her first band Lone Justice.
Saw them at The Gallery and Poly back in the day ...

@OB1 and @Mancitydoogle (plus any other Mellencamp fans out there)

John Mellencamp's new album, Strictly a One-Eyed Jack, has got my out of my comfortable Spotify chair and ordering the CD.

On some of the songs, he sounds like a latter-day Bob Dylan, grumbling like the Cookie Monster, but as was the case in his 80s/90s heyday, his band are terrific on this album. I know that most of the players are different, well Andy York and Miriam Sturm have been around since the mid-90s, but York puts in some fiery dobro on "I Am A Man That Worries". The violin and accordion are used to great effect, plus there's a few straight-up rockers. It helps that Bruce Springsteen turns up on three songs and the other two we haven't heard ahead of the album release are superb (see "Did I Say Such A Thing" below).

Mellencamp's written a decent batch of songs on what is his best album since 2008.

When discussing Jason Isbell the other day someone said we need an Americana / alt.country thread. So, here we go.

To kick things off with a niche suggestion, do we have any fans of Slaid Cleaves here? I bought his 'Wishbones' album years ago, and am just digging through the rest of his discography. His lyrical commentary on the plight of the blue collar worker and the demise of the American working class is right up there with Springsteen and Johnny Cash IMO.

That was excellent. Not heard of him before but I’ll be taking a look.

Great thread, by the way!

Been watching earlier ops today and subsequently listening to Field Manual, a local Macclesfield band, I was very impressed

They were today's opening band at this, which has what I think is a rather eclectic line up

Seeing Andrew Bird this summer, absolutely love him. Bright Eyes are headlining a festival I’m going to as well and they’re one of my most listened to bands ever.

We caught them supporting (the amazing) Ryan Hamilton & The Harlequin Ghosts, at Night & Day in town. Really liked them and bought their album. Saw them at The Blossoms in Stockport not long ago too. Very impressed.

For reasons known only to themselves, they have now changed their name to The John Street Revival .... ?!!

Missing my first Drive by Truckers in Scotland for years.
Playing in Glasgow on Sunday. No late trains the main problem.
Catching up on their new album and Wilco's Cruel Country album.Starting today.

Great thread! Couple of points. Field Manual are really good. They've just had some personnel changes and decided to chchange the name of the band too. They're now "The John Street Revival". Chris who leads the band is a great songwriter and owns the AMP guitars shop in Macc - well worth a visit! Slaid Cleaves is an incredible talent and songwriter. He gets called the Shakespeare of Americana for his fantastic lyrics and story telling in his songs - on a par with Bruce for me. How do I know all this? Check out 'Leek Blues and Americana on Facebook or on t'internet.

Cleaves’s album about the decline of the American motor industry is a thing of pure perfection. I wouldn’t change a note or a word of it.

I forget the name but you’ll know the record I mean.

Just checked the Leek Americana festival btw - I’ll get myself down to that!
