Fans' arrogance a worry
I appreciate the fact that it was off the back of last Sundays momentous victory at the Swamp but on Wednesday night, for the first time, I detected a real arrogance from members of our travelling support. The fact that these fans weren't members of the clearasil army immaturely gloating and bouyed by our new success and wealth but were instead seemingly veterans of many seasons of struggle and torment, made it all the more disturbing. They weren't displaying an assured confidence naturally borne out of our teams' achievements this season but were instead displaying an arrogance and swagger ill-fitting with the core values of City supporters. Demeaning comments about opposition fans, stadia and teams are all well and good when its aimed at one of our big-boy opponents like Chelski or the Scum. They don't sit well with me when they are aimed at a team like Wolves who are trying to make a decent fist of contesting two matches within four days against an opposition who are, at present, formidable.
I'm not patronising Wolves here, (todays match might prove a tough test) but I would like to temper our euphoria with a degree of humility and reflection. Not so long ago our club was broke and staring at relative footballing oblivion in the lower reaches of the football league. The fact that we are enjoying the position in which we find ourselves owes much to great good fortune. As we continue with the growth of our club and as success follows us we can expect to pick up new fans from far and wide who follow purely because of the success, but they won't know the history, the struggle, the low ebbs of supporting Our team. All those irritating plastics who follow our 'rather quiet neighbours' may well drift away from their team following success out through the exit turnstiles. Let's not become them, and let's not forget what it means to be City fans. After all, most of the nicest people I know are City fans. We stand for humility, humour, sportsmanship and fair-play, don't we?
