Assisted dying

Are you sure? It can only be delusional that people believe in a ‘sky god’, surely? To probably misquote Douglas Adams and the Babel Fish.

"The argument goes something like this: 'I refuse to prove that I exist,' says God, 'for proof denies faith, and without faith, I am nothing.' 'But, says Man, the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and, by your own arguments, you don't. QED.' 'Oh dear,' says God, 'I hadn't thought of that,' and vanishes in a puff of logic. 'Oh, that was easy,' says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing……
A cross between modus tollens and modus podens which renders both syllogisms invalid.

I'm in favour of assisted dying but the direction of travel is clear. Coupled to the decreasing pension provision, costs of old age / palliative care and the cost of housing, either gen X or y will be doing themselves in so the kids can have a house. Not quite Logan's run, but give it a few more generations and we won't be far off.

Religious folk often regard atheists as delusional, not sure the characterisation is very helpful to understanding either group tbh.
I’d say believing there is some Supreme Being overseeing 7+ billion lives and judging us at every moment to determine if we are good enough to enter his kingdom when we die is a smidge more delusional, or at least irrational, than there isn’t.

But, to each their own. Some people think the world is flat, Trump isn’t a con man, and Putin isn’t a stone cold killer of anyone who gets in his way.

Whatever.

I won’t miss a wink of sleep thinking God might smite me for thinking he’s a figment of the imagination of weak minds being controlled by an ancient patriarchy seeking to wield power over them. Rather, I’ll just be a good person to the people with whom I have interactions and hope that others will attempt the same, so we can all live in a better world.

Much like abortion, it’s not meant to be lauded as a “good” thing, but rather a necessary thing…for those that choose or need it.

Not everything is good or bad, or should be characterized that way.

It's those who are coerced into it that I'm worried about. I'm not against it completely if the safeguards are there.

Guardrails are always important, but the vast, vast majority of people would prefer to choose the date and time of their death than live in pain and abject misery.

I can only speak for myself, but the cottage industry that has blown up squeezing every last penny from the infirm, bleeding them dry of their last dime in high priced assisted living facilities with substandard medical care, is far more distasteful to me than someone choosing not to go through it.

My wife and I each have Healthcare POA over the other, and have made sure that we each understand the other’s personal wishes regarding end of life care, stipulating it in our trusts.
