That's the bit that they want their followers to beleive Bin Laden made his famous from Arabia to al-Andalus (What we know as Spain) speech trying to recreate the days of the Caliphs, ISIS is different they are more of a doomsday cult trying to enable the end of days so the Prophet (or God I forget which one) can return to rule the earth, the enlightenment and the subsequent development of Western Civilisation seems to have passed by the Islamic world (Kamal Ataturk the founding father of modern Turkey was of the exact same opinion and much of what he said back then could be said now)
But there is something far deeper going on, people must remember that most of the Muslim world lives in grinding poverty and is governed by repressive regimes, if you travel and talk to a lot of young Muslims in North Africa and around the world (which I have) you find out that they actually want what we have, the sexual liberty, freedom of expression, our relative wealth etc, but it's denied to them.
Poverty and wealth are really the drivers, religion is just the tool of control. There will never be peace in the world when the richest two - three people own more than the poorest billion .
