Away fans / tourists in home sections

Watch the footage back from 3mins 29 and look at this section in yellow. There's about 50 actual City fans in there celebrating. And about 1500 tourists standing still. There is no way that that many people could get a whole section without the club being involved.

In my block 305 the support was completely different to a usual game. Almost all Asian supporters in there.

There are a lot of people making similar observations but making different interpretations.

I also saw a similar effect vs Brugge. When thousands of families with kids showed up. The common denominator is that the regular City fan has stopped going to Cup games.

I
How have you worked out that of the crowd 40% were City fans, 30% weren't City fans, and 30% were City tourists? How do you define each category, and how did you allocate each fan to each category?
He checked each of their credentials and with the aid of a abacus he was able to ascertain the percentages of each category.

He asked every fan. ;-)

Seriously.

It was obvious being there last night, outside and inside the ground, without putting an exact figure on it.

I was close to a couple of potential flash points with Madrid fans that included Madrid fans getting ejected (first incident) and a Madrid fan goading City fans at the final whistle from the corporate seats.
I was surrounded by them at the block of 305. In the non-season ticket holder part right at the back of the block. There must have been 30-50 Real Madrid fans celebrating towards the end. There was no aggression or fighting but I didn't enjoy it. It could easily have gone off but i think City fans in that part of the ground are used to it. I've seen it loads of times this season. We had some Dutch fans in there when Utd were playing a Dutch team in the UEFA League the next day. I have forgotten their name. They were good fun but it's obviously very easy to get seats in parts of the ground.

There is a hospitality package through the club where you get a meal at that Vermillion restaurant in miles platting and a match ticket. That restaurant seats around 800 people. They all get seats in this part of the stadium. Anyone can get these tickets if you’re prepared to pay.

Every time the club put Season Ticket prices up, more fans give up their Season Tickets. Then, City aren’t releasing new Season Tickets, so every year fewer proper City fans are part of the attendances.

Every time the club put Season Tickets prices up, there are more fans who keep their Season Ticket but who come out of a Cup Scheme, a few Cup Schemes or all the Cup Schemes to take money back.

There’ve been 13 price rises in 15 years, some as high as 12% when inflation was at 1%.

The more people come out of the Cup Schemes, the less people still in them enjoy the Cup games due to not enjoying being part of the crowd they’re in. So, the next season they too come out of the Cup Schemes.

Last night was in the Gutter Round of the CL. It wasn’t even the Ro16. The Gutter Round are games that have never existed before and we had two weeks’ notice to find £52.50 for it, after just having paid £35 for Brugge in the League Phase which was £10 more expensive than any Group Stage game in the previous two CL campaigns to this one. Brugge itself was also a game we’ve never had to pay for before since it was the 4th home game (when there’d only ever been 3 before).
Therefore, when Madrid prices came out, even fans in the Cup Schemes decided to come out of the Cup Scheme or relist their ticket.

This isn’t Season Ticket holders fault. It is solely the club’s greed over many years that is at fault.

City fans without Season Tickets are looking at the prices of games, they’re looking at £52.50 for Madrid or £75 for Newcastle. They can’t afford both and Newcastle is on a Saturday at 3pm so it’s a no brainer which one they’re going to choose.

If both were £35, they’d likely go to both.

I went last night because I could afford it. But I did not enjoy being part of that crowd last night. It wasn’t a City crowd. I felt like an imposter in my own stadium. It was that bad that a bit of my love for football and City died last night and I too am now thinking that I’m never going to enter the CL Cup Scheme again. I even think the atmosphere from the regulars that did attend last night was good, but the number of non-City fans there last night was an all-time high, and I didn’t like it: I would estimate that 30% of those in attendance last night weren’t City fans, 30% were City tourists and 40% were City fans.
Absolutely agree with this. I left the CL scheme this season. Too many away fans in EL3 surrounding the few season ticket holders who were attending CL games. Ridiculous of the club to allow this to happen.

It was obvious that there was a very different demographic but tourist / non City fan doesn't necessarily follow. It's based on assumptions. Those assumptions could be wrong. Asians wearing half and half scarves could mean anything. That's really what we are talking about. I identify with these people because I am Asian and I like that they come to the football. I think most are blues but the assumption that they are tourists could I concede also be right. We have know what of knowing just by observing them because people behave differently.

I might be talking complete nonsense. You can make your own mind up. It is best to weigh up different ideas before making your mind up.

What happens at womens football when a goal is scored? Are their limbs everywhere? I know what happened when City scored in the Brugge game when I was surrounded by families and children. Lots of extraordinarily happy people but they weren't throwing themselves around going crazy.

Something is happening at City. The one thing we can all agree on is his analysis of the alienation of season ticket holders from the Cups. That is obvious.

Last night, East Stand (where our quiet and weedy fans sit) top tier, one of our fans asked a steward to do something about the Madrid fans. My son was up there - saw it all. The steward told the Madrid fans to feck off out. They refused so he made a half arsed threat to come back with reinforcements - but he bottled it - didn't come back. One of our Scottish fans took the law into his own hands, issued a loud threat, and laid out the Madrid gobshite. I'm in the second tier - East Stand to be near my mate - having spent 18 years in the more raucous North (Family) Stand with the semi-retired firm hoolies.
Story doesn’t sound accurate. East stand top tier full of weedy and quiet fans yet someone laid out the Madrid “gobshite “

Yes. That's true. I think Pep's restaurant in town is also involved. Although the restaurant might seat 800, it doesn't mean that there are 800 involved. I think that tens of thousands of fans bought tickets online from mancity.com because only a small fraction of City season-ticket holders are going to these games now.

In the CL you also get some posh seats as well in the CB stand I think.

The ship has sailed . Football is now a global entertainment spectacle and heavily marketed to a global audience . It's like wanting the Russel Club back instead of stadium rock .

Of course I miss the old days but its not going to change . Had a whiff of Kippax nostalgia watching Port Vale Vs Accrington Stanley from the Railway Stand a couple of weeks ago ..it was like a smaller version of the Kippax : a great big shed the whole length of the pitch . Lots of atmosphere even if only a third full. Bliss . But if Vale ever get good it'll be stuff full of the same crowd we get at the big games ...
Loved The Russel Club

There is no way 800 are in the Vermillion on match day, that would be max capacity for a function and not the part set aside for a set sit down menu.

Tast is Soriano's really, Pep has little or nothing invested.

Peps restaurant deals with chairman, executives etc from away clubs, not package tickets.

No we're not, Your making it about Asians wearing City scarfs. I saw just as many Chinese, fans from the Middle East, Hong Kongers, North Africans, Europeans, I heard numerous different languages as well. The same fans filming the game, many wearing half and half scarfs with the Real Madrid section of the scarf showing around their necks, not celebrating City's goals, celebrating Real Madrid goals in the home ends.

Women's football is totally different. You can't compare it to the men's game.
.

Don't hold your breath - it is Soriano's dream becoming a local yet global team

The local global paradox I called it at the time, but I wasn't popular for not liking it especially this bit:

"The challenge for a global football team is to turn its fans into customers" - we had JG lined up as manager so no one questioned it, but it has happened.

He did his job as has Danny Wilson.

Fucking love Alex.

Still no reply from the club to the letter signed by numerous City fan groups.

There you have it.

Ignore it. Don't reply. Hopefully their problem and their grievances will go away.

The club has had enough time to call the groups in, and to sit down with them to discuss our grievances, but they haven't so far.

A lot of the ethnic groups / fans you describe were supporting City or neutrals so the problem is about having Madrid fans in the home end. Part of the solution could be encouraging more season card holders to attend but a lot don’t want “the hassle” of attending midweek matches as well affordability, transport problems, the weather, 2 home games in 4 days etc
