Barry is still good enough

Adrian Durham disagrees.

Since the Manchester derby a strange group of people have been roaming the British Isles.

They communicate mainly via Twitter and they feed off any crumbs of criticism they can find to attack Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United.

They dined out on the controversial red card for Nani that saw United unfairly knocked out of the Champions League.

They got unnaturally excited about the 1-0 defeat at Chelsea in the FA Cup.

These people watched the Manchester derby and concluded Gareth Barry must be better than Michael Carrick.

They’ve even suggested Manchester United are not the best side in the Premier League this season. If you look hard enough on Twitter you’ll find them.

It’s pathetic.

Like Superman couldn’t handle Kryptonite, these strange people can’t handle the truth. It hurts them too much.

Manchester United are miles clear, they’re the best team in the country, and one defeat against the second best team in the country doesn’t change that.

If you base a view of Carrick or Rooney or Ferdinand on one game you’ve either got a grudge, or you’re desperate to prove a point that you know, deep down, isn’t actually true.

These players have been picked regularly by Sir Alex Ferguson for a number of years, a spell that represents the most sustained period of success United have ever had.

Has Fergie been wrong all these years? That’s a bold claim.

The strange group of people desperate to put United down will point at Welbeck and Jones and bleat on about how they’re not good enough, no technique, poor English players.

They’re about to win the title. Easily.

The critics need to shut up, until they’ve got a good point to make.

They’re the kind of people holding English football back and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Gareth Barry was tremendous last night.
Just check out who it is who is first one back covering when any of our full backs push on.
Just check out who links a lot of our play on the edge of their box.
And more importantly just check out who is first one there in camelgobs face when he refused to kick the ball out.[He was`nt lacking pace then]

Just think that a top top level midfielder to complement yaya would allow the big man to be around the opposing box throughout games, he'd score 10 a season and create x10 what he does now - Barry has been great but we need a step up now!!!

Totally agree there Zin. Barry is extremely consistent and gives us a solid base but we do need an upgrade on him to take us to that next level and get us through the group stages of the Champions League

Barry is still good enough against around 85%-90% of the Premier League but sadly not many European teams, at least the sort we keep pulling out of the hat as he looks badly outclassed in nearly all our European games. United's midfield is WEAK, their fans all recognise this but Ferguson is more interested in wingers and strikers than midfielders, although I expect that to change soon.

Alonso and Khadeira are not the fastest players in Europe.

Pace is not required for every position.
It's less the amount of pace Barry has and more that he doesn't handle being pressed as well as he could, which is not great against the better European teams.

Spot on - his short game is limited when under pressure, he rushes the pass!

Yes, when I say slow I don't just mean running in a straight line. (Onouha was supposed to be a sprint champion but he looked slow to me)

Speed of thought, awareness, quickness of feet etc...

The best players know where they will pass it before receiving it - Xavi, iniesta, silva, yaya etc... barry doesn't.

He is also done by players with quick feet like Dortmund, Ajax and Madrid.

Kompany and Zabaleta are also done by quick feet with their habits of diving into tackles rather than standing their ground.

Brilliant player.

He, like Jimmy, is the kind of player that you don't appreciate unless you watch them every week.

Wish he had a right foot though.
