Pellegrini would have identified Bony as a target and asked Txiki to go get him. He obviously liked him before he even arrived and thought he'd fit the team. Now he's trying to make it work, to justify why he bought him in the first place and also because Bony was not a shit player, but he's clearly lost all form and confidence - any decent manager would try to get their player out of a slump, it's why successive Chelsea managers tried and tried with Torres.
I also wouldn't be surprised if Bony was much better in training and was just shitting the bed in games when the pressure of his awful City career is on him. You can see every time he comes on, he's got a monkey on his back, and every poor touch or sliced shot just weighs him down even more.
