I wonder whether lots of these players would have been more inclined to keep their heads down and get on with things if they had known he was there for the longer term. I can only imagine how difficult it must make life for a manager to try to convince players like Bellamy to do things they don't want to when the player thinks the manager won't be there long.
I would say it's a huge factor.
Regardless of what the Saint Bobby brigade on here think, Mancini was not seen as the medium/long term choice until a couple of weeks before the end of the season. The players speculated about his future just as much as we did on here an, in truth, most believed he was a stop-gap until the summer. It undermined his authority significantly.
That's why, despite, serious misgivings, he has a clean slate with me this season. It was a difficult situation to work in. He knew the club had fingers in other pies - well one particular pie.
So yes, the fact that a number of high-profile players criticised him last season, publicly and privately, was probably down to the way his appointment was handled. And that bloody press conference.
If it rumbles into this season after all the departures then we've got a real problem. If it goes away and the squad look "together" then we are OK.
I really worry about it and hugely sympathise with Mancini. Once you have your authority undermined like that, it is difficult to see how you can completely get the authority back. Getting rid of the main problems (ie Bellamy) will help but there are still going to be some in the squad who didn't fully respect him at first (at least partly due to the circumstances) and we all know about first impressions and all that. If he can turn this around then I think it is fair to say that he is a very good manager indeed. If not, then difficult to judge him as the club dealt him a pretty terrible hand.
