I don't think you can describe Johnson as a career politician. He's had a number of jobs outside of politics and his path has certainly meandered. Should the Conservatives fail to secure an outright victory in 2015, which is quite likely, there could be a clamour for Johnson to head the party. However, he's arguably more a populist than anything, and being Mayor of London allows him greater freedom than he'd have as leader of the Conservatives. As a leader, he'd have to restrain others,let alone himself, and another thing counting against him is that the Conservatives also have a habit of choosing the option that few had predicted.
