back from beer to football.

Tonight is the return of the Lower Saxony derby: Hannover 96 vs. Eintracht Braunschweig.
First played in the Bundesliga since 1976.
The rivalry dates back to the 17th century. Well, not in football, but between the two cities. Both were independent states in most parts of german history and both have their roots in the nobility of the "Welfen", who also played a role on some island in the Atlantic, as far as i know.

Must be about the 17th century, when Hannover became more important than Braunschweig.
The first football match ever in germany was played in 1874 in Braunschweig, where also the first german football rules were written down. Hannover had the first football club in 1878, but that was just the name "football club", they played Rugby indeed.

After the war the Brits founded the state of Lower Saxony with Hannover as capital, while Braunschweig near to the east german border was marginalized. The revenge came in 1963, when Eintracht Braunschweig was chosen as starting member of the Bundesliga and not Hannover (with Braunschweig winning the title in 1967)

To play it on dark friday evening is not really a clever idea, but sunday marks the fourth anniversary of the suicide of Hannover keeper Robert Enke, so Hannover wanted it not to near to that date. (A pig running around Hannover streets yesterday with a Hannover scarf around his neck and the number 1 written on his body may give an idea, why they were afraid of it played on sunday)

All media expecting a riot, but hopefully it stays calm tonight

Atmosphere has been mental here all week, I live near Hannover and they are talking about nothing else. My girlfriend and her family are all Eintracht fans. They could have sold over 100,000 tickets for the game tonight.

Didn't look many Eintracht there, did they limit tickets?

Poor game, they always are when hyped up so much.

Interesting CL week for the German clubs. Leverkusen as expected had another great result and are really punching way above their weight, I cannot see them getting past the last 16, but a great job making it that far and the experience will do them well. They actually were the better team for me against Shaktar and were unlucky not to win.

I did not see the Schalke game, but from what I hear it was typical stupidity and naivety from them. They came thinking they could dominate at Stamford Bridge and were easily picked off. Results have gone their way and they too should make the last 16, but barring an inspirational performance from the entire team, that's the furthest they will go.

Dortmund were slightly unlucky to not get a draw, but with the injuries they are being found out. It's been clear for a while that they lack creativity when teams sit back against them. The injuries to Gundogan and Hummels magnified the problem, but it's been clear. They need to add a creative midfielder as soon as possible and has to be a world class one. Reus was poor and Klopp should have taken him off. It's a huge week coming up for Dortmund. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say it could shape the future of the club. Beat Bayern and Napoli, and they will likely make the last 16 and be in a position to resign Reus, Gundogan and Hummels. Fail to win these games and Gundogan at least will leave alongside Lewandowski and nobody is going to believe in them. You cannot keep replacing world class players. Mkhitaryan is not the replacement for Goetze.

EH?

They hammered Munich in the super cup and have had their strongest league start ever, they look stronger than ever tbh especially when Gundogan returns.

Would expect them to win there last two CL games and qualify.

Interesting stuff going on at Dortmund:

As a consequence of the match in Schalke the club cancelled the away season tickets for the three biggest Ultra groups in Dortmund (Unity, Desperados and Jubos).

Dortmund not as good as they were last year
Lots of injuries mate. Gundogan is a huge miss for them, it can be seen from miles. Also, Subotic tore his acl today just before HT, so that's another one to the list. Huge loss for them.

Both them and us just can't escape those injuries, though we are coping very well just because of our incredible depth.
