What's with this trend of letting decent young players leave for free?

He didn't go for free, Groningen paid us £430,000 with 6 months left on his contract (worryingly Lopes is now down to 12 months on his).

My guess is this is standard practice to monitor former youth players in case they reach City's level, then they can return as club-trained players. Barcelona do it with their former academy lads.

Yep.

There's a very realistic view that Lopes, Rekik and Denayer may all leave the club this summer because we are unwilling to play them in the first team and they don't want to wait around whilst we decide whether we're going to be shithouses again or not. Lopes has 12 months and will certainly not be looking at another loan deal now he's playing first team football at Lille and gaining a bit of a following across Europe too. Rekik is already gone bar a shocking turn of events. Denayer has repeatedly said whilst he has been on loan that he isn't staying at Celtic because he is going to come back and expects to be in our first team squad. With Demichelis being given another year and Boyata having nowhere else to go, there's a potential scenario where he'll not get the guarantees of playing opportunity and just walk.

Rekik has actually said that he's coming back to City & that they may decide to loan him out somewhere other than PSV to give him a different challenge. Doesn't seem to have a problem with it.

To be fair he said:

Rekik said, “They want to extend and then send me somewhere else again.”

The centre back has spent the last two seasons on loan with PSV Eindhoven, and is open to a third, “It certainly would not be punishment for another year to play for PSV. There is no decision yet.”

Which is more a compliment to PSV than an expression of happiness with the setup. He's expressed his irritation a few times in the past so I'd be shocked if he signed a new deal, I really would.

the loan system is great but when they are going overseas are they getting that English style of football in premier league the speed aggression and not getting time on the ball

for me the youth who are going to be part of the first team squad should only go on loan for upto 3 months overseas at any club then come back and recess them and then use the english championship for club football not going back overseas

the new setup at EDS and youth levels in football now have uefa cup football so they are getting to play games vs allsorts styles so they learning the right sort of stuff right across europe in club football

the money is what stopping youth coming in you have class players signed on big money deals playing every week and then the bench warmers who are sitting on a wage and don't want to leave the manager not got a chance in bring in 3 or 4 youth players he would have a war on his hands with the first team squad bench warmers

maybe the premier league should used more power to build a reserve league around a match day with a 2 game match day with the reserve playing in the morning at 10am at a 2nd ground
like we have sometimes at the little Etihad

most clubs could build something with a local club or build there own little stadium the money is there
and it could be away of showing football on freeview like on the bbc or itv it would also not get in the way of non league and league club football

After watching our u16's outplay some of their European peers by some distance imo......our youth set up looks very, very bright indeed - we have talent right across the board and, amongst that, some individual brilliance.

Once we clear the decks of the last of the 'old regime' then we can begin integrating these boys slowly into the u18's and then the EDS......and while the impact is still a little way off......the conveyor belt, and our future, looks extremely healthy ;-)

See no reason why Kelechi and Barker shouldn't be involved in the remaining three games. Perfect opportunity to see how they fair in the first team now fourth place is secure.

Not at this stage of the season. We are avoiding finishing 4th and the Champions League play off lottery.
