Chelsea (a) post-match thread

He's also guilty of consistent brainfarts and a lack of focus.

you could say that about most players.overall though he’s won the league two years in a row and was excellent during that.

the team and players can’t always be great. We will have spells like now where we don’t play as well. Even then we are still second, won a trophy and doing well in the other competitions.

it’s not exactly as bad people are making out

Lots of jerking knees, but I guess that's to be expected. Players completely lost their heads and their shape last night. People are focussed on our defending but as always with our team, doesn't matter how we defend, it's how we attack that counts. Mahrez, Sterling, Bernardo, were all absolute really really poor. Bernardo in particular was a ghost for most of the game. The others tried but were completely shut out.

I think the system itself was partially a problem - at times we really had nobody running in behind Chelsea's back line. Everything seemed just about keeping the ball for the sake of it with nobody providing anything approaching a killer pass or a killer run. Chelsea defended deep and well tbf, but we still should've done more with the amount of ball we had.

None of that is to say that we don't have defensive problems which need solving. But we have the players we have, I can't cry about recruitment until the next window is done. I just know that Txiki and co need to work their magic. I suspect we're going to end up signing at least two defensive players though, so that's something.

Losing Sane, Laporte, Kompany and Fernandinho not in midfield had a massive effect. I believe it’s that simple, for those that say Sane would of gone anyway, well the 100 mill we’d of got would surely of been spent.
We’ve over used Sterling and he doesn’t look anything like the player he was becoming.
Whole season has not felt right from the get go, yet we’re right in there for more trophies.

Save for Foden, I look at our midfielders and see a lack of genuine pace, particularly when running back to our goal. A preference for possession has meant that we have fewer younger players that can cover the yards quickly enough, and that was as evident last year as it has been this. Would like to think a couple of younger midfielders would be bought to address this weakness, but I rather doubt that will happen.

The team will get better when we're honest with ourselves and bin off the players who have let us down time and again.

We've got a Europa League level defence at best. There are at least four right backs in the league I'd take over Walker. He brings pace and strength and not a lot else. Cancelo looks like he's not arsed. Stones is too busy fucking his life up. Otamendi is Otamendi and I genuinely can't wait until he leaves. Fernandinho should be a backup option. Mendy is a hunched over Kolarov. Zinchenko was a serviceable left back in the same way that Delph was for a season.

Our defence as a unit is protected by the way we play but on an individual level they are nearly all found wanting.

So Walker has been a standout signing but only half decent. All a bit contradictory.
By far the best of the expensive full backs of recent years although not perfect.
I view this restart as an elongated pre-season so irked rather than angry with this defeat. We have not become a crap team over the last 12 months but there are clear signs we may be regressing particularly in defence. Hopefully Laporte will stay fit but grave concerns surround most of those around him.
Can we continue to depend on Stones, Mendy, Otto, Cancello and Zinchenko? Are serious issues starting to emerge with respect to our number one Keeper?
These are serious questions which were present last March and haven't gone away with the virus.
Anyway despite all this we are still good enough to win trophies but we are likely to struggle to get back ahead of the dippers next season unless me make a few clever adjustments.

Chelsea fan very much here in peace.

Had there been any chance that you winning last night would have put pressure on Liverpool then perhaps my feelings may have been different but at this point in time our focus rightly has to be all about us so as you will no doubt appreciate I am delighted with the three points.

I despise Liverpool with a passion the city, the stadium but above all the supporters. But it would be churlish to not acknowledge how good they are and congratulate them on what is a remarkable season.

The three games in such a short period clearly hurt you but what was key was travelling to London without the normal sort of preparations that top footballers have become used to.Add to that the baking temperatures and of course the pace of the game.

Again it would be churlish not to acknowledge the quality of your play but from a Chelsea perspective I thought we did well and whilst I cant believe that Sterling or Mahrez didn’t score the same could very much be said for Mount and Walkers clearance off the line shouldn’t be forgotten.

Your team and squad has been something else the quality of your play over the last few years has been breathtaking but the loss of Kompany hasn’t been addressed and when you look at the ages of some of your stalwarts you do wonder at which point the powers that be at your club start the massive squad overhaul that will be needed.

Thats not a criticism it’s just reality age waits for no man and all that. That said Foden looks to have been managed incredibly well and is a rare talent so losing Silva probably won’t be felt the same as the impact losing Kompany has had on you.

The reason I linked the above post was just to make the point that at this point in time Chelsea are still in this seasons CL and yes I know that we are 3-0 down in the tie with Bayern but as we all know anything can happen in football.I thought it ironic that the poster rightly levelled criticism at BT but made the same error themselves

Be safe and best wishes going forward.

Excellent post, mate. Deserves requoting. Frank had our number, and right from the off your lads were getting through an astonishing amount of work regrouping immediately after losing the ball so that our midfield just had nowhere to go. Only once were you caught on the break (when Sterling, inexplicably, failed to pass to his right), and we were caught several times with our trousers down by you breaking fast against our slow defence and a clownish performance by our left back. A thoroughly deserved victory and actually it could, and should, have been worse. 3-1, even 4-1, were real possibilities. I’ve never understand why some of you don’t rate Willian (I occasionally look in on the Shed forum). He’s nearly always an absolute pest for us. And Pulisic... well, what can you say?

Anyway... the one thing that unites us all throughout the land. A deep and sincere hatred of LFC and their truly odious supporters. I for one will be avoiding all social media, including and especially the BBC, for the next week or so and I shall have my umbrella up indoors and out to avoid the jizz flying everywhere.

We peaked last season when we were magnificent. The warning signs were there though, Liverpool were getting stronger and stronger. We have strengthened but our recruitment has been sub standard. Going forward we need a major rebuild due to my last statement but financially we probably won't be able to.

Our defence is shocking and our midfield is slow, too easily bypassed and weak. Up front we have an ageing Aguero and in patches Mahrez. Bernardo and Sterlings form has gone off a cliff, will it ever return? Jesus is a more skilful Dickov. Totally anonymous in too many games in spite of his hard work.

In defence only Ederson, Laporte and Walker should stay. In midfield we have Kev, Foden and Bernardo if he regains his form. Fern can do another season but he is coming up to 35 years of age. Up front Aguero and Mahrez should stay, the jury's out on whether Sterling and Jesus can somehow up their game to the level required. Sterling has in the past but has been pretty shocking for a long time now.

Rodri for me is a bad fit for us and the premier league in particular. Too slow. Cancelo and Mendy have been a disaster. Gundogan has quality but again he is slow and disappears too often when the going gets tough. We are losing Silva.

We may have to see us slip down the pecking order for a couple of seasons, especially if the champions league ban stands. Sorry if this sounds a bit doom and gloom and we could still win another two trophies this season but it can't mask our weaknesses

Oh and yes I was there in the dark times but we have to stop measuring today from that, we are a top team and club now and have to be ruthless to stay there.
That is one of the worst posts I've ever had the displeasure of reading on here

39.

That was how many times BT said either:

Liverpool
Anfield

During the active game. Not at half time or before the Match. Within 96mins.

Perhaps they would have been the same if it was City about to win the league...

During a pandemic.
Was that 39 times a minute? When Chelsea went ahead with the pen, Chelsea were not even mentioned, it was 'Liverpool take one step closer..' or along those lines

Overly negative but does highlight the current and potential problems if we wish to stay ahead of the pack. I for one am not really bothered if we don't continue as top dog's as long as we stay clear of League 1!!!

Bang on mate.
Mendy was/is such an unfortunate buy.
Mendy had two chances to deal with that goal, he failed at both, the first was an appalling error but the second was even worse, Gundogan was back helping and all Mendy had to do was stay on his feet and push out Pulsic wide, he did what Mendy always does, dive in and not even get the man or the ball. It left a clear run on goal.
Terrible and very amateurish defending.
For once I agree with Rodney Marsh, he says he won't play again.
